Job Information and Responsibilities
Please note that this is a contract position, with anticipated end date in October 2024.
Under the direction of the Chairperson, Department of Environmental Science, the Science Technician II will:
- Organizes and prepares necessary equipment and materials for Environmental Science courses & laboratories as defined by Lab Manuals and instruction from faculty.
- Sets up equipment and materials for course lab or field use and/or for public displays.
- Instructs lab users on procedures, protocols and methodology as required including departmental and faculty safety policies and procedures.
- Creates and maintains educational displays in the department; recommends, purchases, and promotes educational aids for teaching in the department.
- Verifies that all equipment is in working order before each lab, and before returning equipment to storage. Ensures that any deficiencies are repaired or replaced, as appropriate, in a timely fashion
- Instructs departmental faculty, staff, assistants, and students on safety and emergency response procedures when using lab equipment; ensures all new staff and assistants have Faculty of Science training on the Workplace and Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), proper waste disposal. Coordinates the completion of work instruction documents for all teaching and research labs.
- Obtains food and supplies for animals being housed for research and teaching purposes in ENVS on a weekly basis.
- Anticipates materials and animals required for each course and reports such needs for inclusion into an annual list of materials for tendering or coordinates their immediate purchase, as appropriate.
- Obtains licences, permits, insurance and customs clearance for equipment, materials and software, alcohol, and other restricted chemicals. Anticipates and reports expirations for any licences, insurance and permits and assists with renewal processes in a timely manner.
- Co-ordinates field lab risk hazard assessments and waiver requirements with Risk and Insurance Services
Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Science Technician II you will have:
- Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field related to Environmental Science (e.g., Ecology, Biology, Geography, etc.). A Master's degree may be considered an asset.
- WHMIS training.
- Minimum two years technical experience.
- Computer literate, proficient in MS Office Suite ( in particular spreadsheets) and able and willing to learn advanced software skills (e.g. R statistics, Matlab, Arc GISD).
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to function independently and as part of a team.
