Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Residence Life, the Programming & Engagement Coordinator:

  • Coordinates 12-month cycle of residence-wide social, educational and leadership programming for over 1100 Residence students
  • Supervises the work of 25 student staff on a daily basis, delegates' tasks and ensures they are completed, motivates and mentors student staff on a regular basis.
  • Designs interview processes for various student positions and assesses candidates based on application and interview results to make the final decision regarding hiring.
  • Analyzes Residence Programming work productivity and effectiveness with current staffing and develops new student jobs as needed.
  • Applies for funding for new student staff positions through Student Affairs & Services, SMUWorks or external grant programs.
  • Develops and facilitates training workshops on programming skills, community development, leadership development, graphic design, and social media for student staff both in Residence life and as requested by other departments around campus.
  • Manages departmental social media including writing, designing, editing and publishing content daily and develops and implements marketing plans for programs and events to maximum engagement.
  • Effectively promotes/markets programs and events to diverse populations, including equity-deserving groups.
  • Identifies and develops relationships with internal and external stakeholders who are experts in their field to facilitate educational workshops for students.
  • Represents Residence Life on various university committees, including, the Student Affairs & Services Social Committee, New Student & Family Summer Welcome Committee, etc.
  • Allots funds from the Residence Programming budget to individual programs based on assessment of funding needs, historical program data and departmental goals.
  • Researches costs, coordinates purchases, and maintains inventory of programming materials for events and programs

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Programming & Engagement Coordinator you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree.
  • Minimum one (1) year of directly related experience.
  • Experience working in Residence Life/Housing.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with individuals form various racial and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated competence working effectively in a diverse, and inclusive environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to function independently and as part of team.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple, competing tasks and priorities.
  • Website maintenance and social media experience an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 apps.
  • Initiative and independent thinking.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis, as required
