Mental Health Liaison Nurse
Permanent Full Time
Location: Happy Valley-Goose Bay
Labrador-Grenfell Health is an integrated health authority in Newfoundland and Labrador, employing approximately 1,500 dedicated employees and providing quality health and community services to a population of 37,000 people. The authority operates twenty-two facilities, including three hospitals, three community health centres, 14 community clinics and two long-term care facilities in Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. The vision of Labrador-Grenfell Health is healthy people living in healthy communities. In the Indigenous communities, Labrador-Grenfell Health is joined by the Nunatsiavut Government, two Innu Band Councils, NunatuKavut, Health Canada and private practitioners in delivering community health programs that meet the health needs of residents.

The Mental Health Liaison Nurse is a new clinical position resulting from the announcement of a new model for Mobile Crisis Response Teams (MCRT) in the province. Implementation of this new model, the Memphis Model, is a priority action of Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador, which identifies mobile crisis intervention teams as part of a stepped-care approach to mental health and addictions services throughout the province. The Memphis Model is a collaborative approach in which police and mental health professionals work together in responding to mental health crises in the community. This position reports to the Mental Health & Addictions Manager responsible for the service.

Qualifications:

" Graduation from an approved/recognized school of nursing program is required;
" Current and continuing practicing licensure with the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL) is required;
" An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
" Advanced Studies in Mental Health Certificate OR Canadian Nursing Association Psychiatric Nursing Certificate, or willingness to obtain within one (1) year of appointment to position
" Two years' work experience in a multi-disciplinary mental health setting preferred
" Demonstrated knowledge of professional mental health nursing practices; community resource utilization; foundations of practice in the areas of mental health and addictions, including related issues and impacts; and related theories, techniques and intervention.
" Candidates must also possess effective crisis intervention, assessment, analytical, and communication skills. Candidates will also demonstrate a high level of self-awareness, the ability to work with minimal supervision, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships including those with clients, co-workers, supervisors, other professionals and community partners.
" Significant and current knowledge and experience in utilizing community mental health resource and psychiatric approaches, such as supportive counselling, and crisis and suicide intervention.
" Current registration with the Association of registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL)
" Valid driver's license and use of private vehicle
" The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.

Duties: (Included but not limited to)

" Works closely with police agencies in the implementation and in the ongoing operations of the service.
" Exercises a significant degree of independent clinical judgment, quick decision making and the ability to assess and intervene competently and calmly in crisis situations in order to ensure a quality service.
" Participates in orientation and continuing educational events, clinical case conferencing activities and community mental health research and quality assurance.
" Provides walk-in clinic service to individuals and support to individuals who present to the Emergency Room or admitted to Inpatient Services after regular working hours.
" Conducts mental health assessments; obtain collateral information from nursing/medical staff, family members and when necessary, coordinate with other disciplines and with available community resources to provide follow-up care, to enhance service to clients.
" Documentation of all patient contacts and outcomes is also required.
" Other related duties as required, travel may be required, may be required to work alone.

Salary:

" NS - 28 of the RNUNL Salary Scales, $37.86 - 47.16 per hour plus the applicable Labrador Allowance.

Financial incentives that may be available, and can be combined, include:
" Come Home Year Incentive up to $50,000
" Sign On Bonus up to $16,000
" Retention Incentive $5000 annually
" Possible Relocation assistance and support

Hours of Work:

" 75 hours Bi-weekly; variable shifts.
