Medical Laboratory Assistant
Temporary Call In (2 positions)
Location: St. Anthony, Roddickton,
Flowers Cove, and Forteau, NL

The primary purpose of this position is to provide client/patient registration for blood samples and laboratory specimens, order laboratory tests, send out and receive samples and specimens, perform phlebotomy procedures, packaging and sending of specimens to outside laboratories, and receiving of samples, as well as maintaining inventory of supplies, while reporting to the Lead Medical Laboratory Technologist III.

Qualifications:

" Graduation from a High School or equivalent;
" Successful Completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant Course (one year) from a recognized training program;
" Must successfully pass the Medical Laboratory Assistant registration exams with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science, (CSLMS) at the end of the recognized training program and maintain current membership;
" Experience with Meditech would be an asset;
" Must have basic CPR;
" Must have good communication, and interpersonal skills, and be able to answer questions from staff, and other stakeholders concerning procedures and processes in the Laboratory Department;
" The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.

Duties: (Included but not limited to)

" Responsible for registration and test ordering of inpatient, out-patient, and referred-in specimens from other clinics;
" Collects client/patient blood samples and receives and distributes other biological samples daily;
" Instruct patients in the various collection procedures for biological samples and the fasting requirements for various laboratory test procedures;
" Responsible for the packing, sorting, sending, and recording of specimens to referral centers;
" Ensure all the requirements are met for Laboratory accreditation as recommended by Accreditation Canada, and the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare, IQMH, and always maintain these standards while working in the Laboratory Department;
" Responsible for obtaining weekly supplies;
" Conduct audits on referred out specimens;
" Must be an active in keeping all work areas, and the entire Medical Laboratory Department clean and tidy at all times; Supplies when delivered must be stored in the appropriate place, and not left standing in the Medical Laboratory Department unattended causing a potential hazard in the workplace;
" Must assist in cleaning Laboratory Equipment and the Work Benches;
" Safety is a priority for Labrador Grenfell Health. All staff (and volunteers) must/are responsible to ensure that safety for patients/residents/clients, coworkers and themselves is paramount in the workplace;
" Follows infection control guidelines for "Standard Precautions" when handling samples and specimens as outlined in the Infection Control Manual;
" Reviews annually, or as needed, the department's Fire and Evacuation, Emergency Planning, Infection Control, WHMIS, and Laboratory Safety manuals;
" Assists in the orientation and training of new Medical Laboratory Department employees;
" Other related duties as required.

Salary:

" LX-19 of the Nape-LX salary scales, $21.78 to $25.50 per hour.

Hours of Work:

Variable shifts as per the departmental rotational operational schedule.
