ATHLETICS, RECREATION, AND WELLNESS DEPARTMENT
The Athletics, Recreation and Wellness Department (ARW) offers quality competitive varsity and club sports to its students and provides recreational and wellness opportunities to the campus and community.

WHAT WE OFFER

Full-time | Term Ending September 1, 2025 | Saint John | On-Campus

Standard Work Hours:
Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 36.25 hours per week

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Must be flexible to work evenings and weekends.

Salary Range: $41,093 - $51,365 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, Recreation & Wellness, the ARW Communications Officer works closely with the varsity and program coordinators and collaborates with the Office of Strategic Communications & Marketing. The ARW Communications Officer develops, implements, manages, and evaluates communications, sports information, and digital content and productions needs.

  • Manage and oversee the development, implementation, optimization and reporting of ARW marketing and communications strategy and plans.
  • Collaborate to plan, organize, promote, and oversee communication strategies for events, including home games, tournaments, lunch & learns, fitness classes, camps, media events, and special events.
  • Craft written materials such as compelling stories, profiles, news releases, speeches, presentations, newsletters, etc.
  • Manage marketing collateral tasks such as posters, large format signage, programs, presentations, brochures, event materials, photography, and videography.
  • Administer the UNB Saint John Seawolves and SJ Rec social media network.
  • Oversee the UNB Saint John Seawolves and Athletics, Recreation & Wellness website.
  • Oversee all communication and media requirements by the ACAA and CCAA including the preparation of award nominations.
  • Support varsity athletics game day management: Hire and manage casual staff, live stream and report on games, and provide media relations.
  • Collaborate with the ARW team to plan student-athlete awards celebration events.
  • Collaborate with programs and varsity coordinator on the initialization and promotion of club and varsity team fundraising initiatives.
  • Attend Marketing and Communications Group and reports initiatives to the ARW team.
  • Represent ARW on institution committees including, but not limited to SOAR and Orientation.
  • Represent UNB Saint John on appropriate conference committees, providing insight and expertise for topics related to Sports Information.
  • Other duties as required by the Director.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in sports media.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Additional Strengths

  • Demonstrated understanding of the university student-athlete and coaches is an asset.
  • Knowledge of conference (ACAA) and sport governing body (CCAA).
  • Superior writing, editing, and copy-editing skills (strong emphasis on storytelling).
  • Keen attention to detail and knowledge of CP Style.
  • Deep understanding of communication and social media practices and techniques.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven experience developing, implementing, and evaluating marketing & communication strategies and tactics.
  • Knowledge of basic graphic design principles.
  • Proficient computer skills and knowledge or experience with some or most of the following programs: Office 365 Suite, social media platforms, Box Out Sports, Adobe Suite, and content management such as Presto, Cascade, etc.
  • Basic photography Photoshop.
  • Ability to work independently while simultaneously managing multiple priorities under challenging time constraints. Positive attitude with a strong team player mindset.
