This is a Term employment opportunity from April 2023 to April 2025, with the possibility of extension, located at any NBCC location.

Responsibilities

As part of the Registrar's Office and reporting to the Head of Admissions, the Recognition of Prior Learning Consultant is responsible for providing academic assessment and advisement to a diverse client population including prospects, applicants, enrolled students, and stakeholders regarding prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR). The Recognition of Prior Learning Consultant evaluates, assesses, and implements strategies to support the growth and education of PLAR at NBCC.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Evaluates and authenticates applicant credentials, experiential learning, and academic history to determine eligibility for PLAR using thorough knowledge of varied educational systems and PLAR best practices.
  • Development and coordination of all activities related to prior learning assessment and credit for prior learning areas, such as portfolio assessment and evaluation of informal and non-formal learning.
  • Advises College academic and administrative departments on inbound and outbound transfer and PLAR arrangements, including working with RPL Champions and external stakeholders.
  • Developing tools and collateral in order to help students clarify goals in seeking PLAR.
  • Coordinating and facilitating Prior Learning Assessment training for subject matter experts.
  • Represents the College externally and the Registrar's Office internally on associated transfer/PLAR committees.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or Degree, preferably in Psychology, Human Services or Adult Education; or relevant field, with demonstrated related work experience.
  • Sound understanding of curriculum outcomes, and assessment of equivalency with regard to outcomes, in order to assess prior learning requests comprised of experiential learning and/or transfer credit equivalency.
  • Highly flexible with excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to navigate and build relationships effectively throughout the organization.
  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Teams based collaboration.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, analytical ability, and innovative thinking.
  • Self-motivated, service and results oriented.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
  • A desire for continuous learning and growth.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated experience with Student Information Systems (SIS) or other database management systems, experience with document management software and working within a customer service management system would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Recognition of Prior Learning advising, portfolio development, flexible assessment practices, including best practices and knowledge of transfer credit will be considered as an asset.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working in a post-secondary environment.

This position is a unionized position where the terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NBUPPE - Education (Consultation and Development) collective agreement for the College.
