Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre

The Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre (MWC), located on the traditional territory of Wolastoqiyik at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus, provides a learning environment for Indigenous students to develop a strong cultural foundation as well as academic and professional skills. YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director of the Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre, the role of Wicuhkekemit is to oversee the financial and administrative functions of the day-to-day operations of the centre and to provide personal assistance to Kcihcihtuwihut (UNB's Elder-in-Residence) in terms of scheduling, communications, and other administrative duties as appropriate.

  • Aid Kcihcihtuwihut in her role as Elder-in-Residence.
  • Act as liaison between Kcihcihtuwihut and the UNB and Indigenous communities in scheduling and attending events.
  • Assist with daily tasks such as preparation for ceremonies and other engagements at UNB and in Fredericton and surrounding communities.
  • Assist Kcihcihtuwihut with any written correspondence, curation, and documentation of cultural artifacts, cultural displays, and other tasks.
  • Communicate with the Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre's Council of Elders to arrange meetings and other engagements.
  • Act as initial contact for the department and respond to inquiries in-person, via email, and by telephone.
  • Maintain and update records and files.
  • Prepare documents, reports, forms, letters, etc.
  • Assist in the budget preparation, monitoring and reporting.
  • Prepare and process all administrative financial transactions and paperwork, such as travel expense claims, purchase order requests, invoices, etc.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post-secondary education in Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a related field.

Additional Strengths

  • Knowledge of Wabanaki Language systems, ceremonies, and traditions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency in computer applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with the UNB policies and procedures is considered an asset.
  • Experience using Colleague is considered an asset.
