New Start Counselling is a not-for-profit community-based agency that offers individual and group counselling to help people move away from abuse and/or violence in their relationships and toward respect. New Start practices a Narrative Therapy approach that invites people to identify what they want in relationships to achieve the relationship they prefer. Counsellors work with both sides of intimate partner relationships. Located in downtown Dartmouth, New Start Counselling serves a culturally diverse population, often marginalized by poverty and racism.
Job Description - Counsellor
The counsellor works as a member of a therapeutic team in a clinical setting. You will provide counselling to clients that have used abuse and/or violence against their partner, as well as counselling partners who have been affected by abuse and/or violence. Counselling will be offered in person, online or by phone.
Responsibilities:
- Provide therapeutic counselling to clients in both group and individual contexts
- Use collaborative approaches for safety and accountability.
- Write reports
- Employ case management including: case notes, phone contact with other professionals, and case conferencing
- Participate in weekly clinical meetings
- Engage in Professional Development
Qualifications:
- Master of Education in Counselling or Master of Social Work (Clinical) or equivalent.
- Registered with a professional college or eligible to register in a professional college.
- Ability to effectively manage a client case-load.
- Past group facilitation in a similar setting would be an asset
- Competency in word processing and database management
- Understanding of diversity and inclusion and its impact on peoples' lives, along with the ability to provide counselling through a diversity lens.

We are hiring two (2) clinicians. One is a permanent, full-time position and the other is permanent, part-time (0.6 or 3 days per week) which is a flexible schedule and can be built around the needs of the applicant.
