Join the world's largest humanitarian network. The Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS) is a not for profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world.
CRCS is currently seeking experienced Nurses in Labour and Delivery to be part of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) roster of the Canadian Red Cross. ERU Delegates are trained and ready to be deployed for 4 to 6 weeks on short notice in the event of an overseas emergency.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
1. To plan and support maternal-child health care (MCH) activities together with the host National Society and / or local health authorities. This may include:
  • Ante-natal care (incl. uncomplicated pregnancy)
  • Labour and delivery (incl. uncomplicated pregnancy)
  • Post-natal care
  • Support to Safe Motherhood and breastfeeding initiatives
  • Immunisation of mother and child
  • Paediatric care
  • Family planning
  • Nutritional surveillance

2. To work with and / or train traditional birth attendants (TBA) and community health workers (CHW) according to public health principles and local health standards.
3. To manage the obstetrics ward and delivery room
4. To coordinate referrals from the out-patient department or other clinics
5. To provide all emergency obstetric cases (incl. assistance with caesarean sections as needed and/or facilitating referral and transport to a specialized care facility).
6. To work with and/or train local midwives/nurses according to public health principles and local health standards.
7. To provide regular and timely reports, inclusive of health statistics according to health monitoring system.
8. To support the capacity of the host National Society and develop clinical skills where possible.
To deploy with us on national or international missions as an ERU Nurses in Labour and Delivery delegate, you must have:
  • Registered Nurse in Canada with a valid professional license and with over five years experience in labour and delivery
  • Comfortable managing maternal health and peri-natal care in a low-resource environment
  • Able to work independently and consult MD/refer patients as needed
  • Comfortable with carrying out pre- and post-natal consultations
  • Capable of decision-making in conditions of uncertainty
  • Experience of managing and supporting staff
  • Experience in living or working in a cultural context other than your own
  • Able to work with limited resources
  • Able to be innovative and at ease in problem solving
  • Capable of handling extreme stress, change and situations of insecurity
  • Competent in computer use (Windows, Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, word-processing, and e-mail)
  • Fluent in English
  • Must be already eligible to work in Canada.

You will stand out if you have:
  • Fluency in more than one language including French, Spanish, and/or Arabic
  • Experience working for the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement
  • Experience working for a humanitarian aid organisation in a developing country
  • Experience with the management of medical resources

Additional Requirements
  • Ability to deploy for 4-6 weeks on short notice
  • A valid passport (with at least 6 months validity)
  • A valid provincial driver's license (with ability to drive manual gears)
  • A valid First Aid certificate
  • Ability to complete a satisfactory Canadian criminal record reference check
  • Ability to complete a satisfactory vulnerable sector check

Full vaccination against COVID-19 is mandatory for this position and operation (the CRC will however adhere to its duty to accommodate those who are unable to be fully vaccinated for a reason related to a human right protected ground)
