The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development is seeking an individual for the position of Director of the Forest Operations and Development Branch, in Fredericton.

As a member of the senior management team and reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Forestry Division, the successful candidate will be responsible for the overall direction and management of the following program areas: silviculture, nursery operations, forest operations, outcome and compliance, roads, timber rates, operating plans, industrial plans, licensee and sub-licensee agreements, industry relations, and private woodlot relations. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the ongoing development of an operations management system, including guidelines, processes, standard operating procedures, methodologies, controls, and overall best practices to enhance core capabilities and to ensure operational effectiveness. Responsibilities of this position also include the following: managing and providing leadership to branch staff, including developing work plans, supporting developmental opportunities and training, managing performance, establishing priorities and succession planning; participating in activities and issues related to recruitment, labour relations, classification, grievances, discipline, and safety; preparing and monitoring the branch budget; reviewing and recommending regulatory and legislative changes; developing and reviewing related policies and procedures; promoting the sustainable management of Crown forests; driving change as needed to contribute to the overall growth and success of the organization; developing and maintaining positive relationships with employees, clients, investors, partners and all stakeholders; and performing other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A University degree in Forestry or a related discipline and a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively more responsible work experience with forestry programs and activities, including a minimum of three (3) years at the manager level with human resources and financial management responsibilities. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate: a Master's in Forestry or a related discipline; a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively more responsible work experience with forestry programs and activities including a minimum of three (3) years at the manager level with human resources and financial management responsibilities. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to work outside of the standard work hours and travel within and outside of the Province as required.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: The successful candidate will possess the following technical competencies:

  • Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge of forest management operations and activities;
  • Knowledge of forestry business principles and practices;

SALARY: $93,990 to $105,846 per annum
