The Opportunity:
In this position, you will work with the Group Underwriting teams to ensure Medavie Blue Cross achieves its underwriting targets. As well, you will work closely with the Sales team in dealings with producers to ensure our group business achieves profitable growth. In that role, you may have to be part of any finalist presentation or negotiating renewals in front of the producer and/or client with the Sales representative.
In that role, you will be coaching and mentoring the underwriting teams in regards of underwriting, best practices and market dynamic. In that role, you will be participating and leading strategic projects to increase efficiencies and processes as well as being proactive to the Market needs.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assessment of risk and management of major accounts for all line of business;
  • Ensuring the efficiencies and good flow of the small groups unit (Centre of Excellence)
  • Expend and create market strategies (rates, fees, rate guaranteed, cap) of major accounts ;
  • Contribute to the growth objectives of Medavie
  • Development and ongoing maintenance of direct relationships with clients, brokers, consultants and internal stakeholders;
  • Participation in presentations for clients and consultants as required;
  • Coaching and mentoring underwriters on the team;

Qualifications:
Education : Post-secondary education; GBA designation under CEBS program strongly preferred.
Work Experience : More than five (10) years of group underwriting experience.
Other Qualifications:
  • Can apply group insurance underwriting principles and assessment techniques to provide technical underwriting solutions for customers;
  • Have an excellent knowledge of group benefit plans;
  • Have an excellent knowledge of financial agreements for all LOB, including Life and LTD;
  • Knowledge of competitors' strengths and weaknesses;
  • Self-directed with high levels of personal accountability and responsibility;
  • Excellent reasoning, judgment and decision-making abilities;
  • Possess strong analytical skills with high attention to detail;
  • Time-management skills and enjoy working in a fast paced environment involving multiple tasks and priorities;
  • Strong negotiation and presentation skills; and
  • Ability to travel occasionally.
  • Strong business acumen;
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical results in a variety of settings and styles to assist stakeholders in making informed decisions.

Computer Skills : Strong working knowledge of MS Excel and Word.
Language Skills : Excellent command of the English language including good written communication. Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
