Regional Medical Officer of Health


The Department of Health is seeking an individual to join the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health as the Regional Medical Officer of Health for the south region (Saint John).

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health, the successful candidate will work with teams of professionals from the regional health authority and partner departments and will be responsible to provide advice, expertise and assistance on aspects of: health advocacy and promotion; surveillance, prevention and control of communicable diseases; detection, investigation and mitigation of risks from environmental hazards and from injuries; coordination of emergency response by Public Health staff; providing medical/technical advice, consultation and support to regional teams of professionals directly delivering numerous Public Health programs, and efficient quality services via many disciplines, namely nurses, nutritionists, and Public Health inspectors; collaborating with community partners in the pursuance of common Public Health goals and objectives; being a resource to the medical community, and community-based health organizations in matters of Public Health; acting as the senior representative of the Department of Health for matters of Public Health in their geographic region; being a health advocate for the prevention and control of disease and the improvement of conditions and factors leading to better health in the community; facilitating enforcement of applicable sections of the Public Health Act and its regulations; being a media spokesperson in the region on matters related to Public Health; participating in the MOH call schedule to ensure out of hours access to MOH expertise.


MOH I - Graduation from an approved school of medicine supplemented by a Masters in Public Health or in a related health field with applicable focus on disease prevention and control, epidemiology of communicable disease, and health promotion and protection.

MOH II - Graduation from an approved school of medicine, supplemented by certification in the medical specialty of Public Health and Preventive Medicine; or Graduation from an approved school of medicine supplemented by a Masters in Public Health or in a related health field with applicable focus on disease prevention and control, epidemiology of communicable disease, health promotion and protection and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience.

Applicants must be eligible for full licensure for independent practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick. Applicants will require substantive knowledge in public health, including the aspects of epidemiology, prevention and control, as well as outbreak management. A sound knowledge of health promotion, protection and population health principles is also necessary.

Salary: $227,786 to $276,900 per annum
