Position Overview

The Maintenance Manager, under the direction of the Assistant General Manager, will primarily be responsible to ensure all appropriate workplace regulations and legislation regarding health and safety, accommodation standards, and company policies and procedures are adhered to at all times. This position will ensure that safe work practices are being followed, establish building maintenance schedules, ensure the facility and on-site equipment are compliant with applicable building and/or safety codes, and coordinate and delegate service requests with support from the maintenance person(s) or with external service providers. This role will also ensure the effectiveness of employees through strategic hiring, assignment of duties, discipline, and dismissal. The Maintenance Manager should possess a degree or an advanced degree in hospitality or a field related to the industry and three years of experience in a management role and six to eight years of experience in the maintenance field.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all appropriate workplace regulations and legislation regarding health and safety, accommodation standards, and company policies and procedures are adhered to at all times
  • Ensure that safe work practices are being followed
  • Ensure the effectiveness of employees through strategic hiring, assignment of duties, discipline, and dismissal
  • Ensure that all employees comply with company policies, procedures, and ethical standards
  • Provide employee training, ensuring that all applicable compliance requirements are met
  • Provide leadership for employee relations through effective communications, coaching, training, and development
  • Evaluate employee performance and provide feedback, coaching, and formal evaluations, approves all time reporting for direct reports
  • Ensure the highest standards of personal hygiene and dress is enforced amongst all employees
  • Conducts routine, non-licensed inspections of property and services to ensure compliance with licensing laws, health and safety, and other statutory requirements, including boilers, generators, HVAC to prevent shutdowns
  • Ensure all guests are greeted and welcomed in a friendly manner and their questions are answered as required
  • Attend to customer complaints in a professional manner when they are escalated to the management level
  • Develop strategic performance metrics and targets that are consistent with company goals
  • Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and delegating work accordingly
  • Delegate and/or perform routine maintenance and repairs to facilities including but not limited to carpentry, painting, remodeling, minor electrical, drywall, window cleaning, building repairs, etc.
  • Identifies and addresses critical electrical, mechanical and structural infrastructure needs to ensure business continuity, safety and occupant comfort
  • Maintain shift schedules to ensure sufficient employee coverage
  • Oversee staff to ensure work is being performed according to established standards
  • Participate in site and workplace inspections
  • Plan the department's workload and flow
  • Administer disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures
  • Analyze departmental operations and identify areas requiring improvement
  • Track and records inventory for all equipment Manages multiple service providers contracts bids and submits recommendations to General Manager to action
  • Prepares annual facilities services plans with targets for expenditures and facility repairs, maintenance service contracts based on allocated funds, evaluates, and submits cost reduction proposals and provides personal contacts and discounts for additional savings.
  • Monitor the daily and monthly maintenance budget, ensuring its accuracy and preventing overspending, and subsequently providing budget reports to the Assistant General Manager.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Degree or an advanced degree in hospitality or a field related to the industry
  • 6-8 years of experience in a building/facilities management and/or maintenance position with at least 2-3 years of management experience
  • Strong formal and informal leadership skills
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
  • Experience with coaching and employee development
  • Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on mentoring and motivation of employees
  • Demonstrated time management skills
  • Ability to identify measures of performance and actions needed to improve or correct performance
  • Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports
  • Ability to remain calm and poised in urgent situations
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Beneficiary Status with the ability to speak Inuktitut preferred
