About the Role

The Relief Kitchen Assistant is responsible to assist the Cook with food preparation and service delivery and in maintaining the required food hygiene and other health and safety standards within the food service department of Sojourn House. As Relief staff, you must be available to accept shifts on an as-needed basis from Monday to Sunday for either the morning or evening shifts. Morning shifts are from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM and evening shifts are from 3:30 PM – 8:30 PM.

In support of its commitment to a healthy, safe, workplace and community all staff must be fully vaccinated as per Agency Policy.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Food preparation:
    • Ensures that food preparation meets all health and safety requirements such as but not limited to the washing and disinfecting of all food preparation work stations between uses (with proper disinfectant solution), proper cleaning of food items glove protection and hair nets or hats worn.
  • Health, Safety and Sanitation
    • Follow and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly listed cleaning functions
    • Hand wash pots after the Cook has finished with them
    • Ensures that all station sinks are left clean at end of shift, rinsed and disinfected.
    • Ensures that kitchen floors are swept and mopped with appropriate hot disinfectant soap after every meal and at end of shift.
    • Ensures that all counters, fridge/freezer doors and interiors are wiped down to remove any spills daily and sanitized accordingly
    • Ensures remaining garbage is disposed of before leaving shift and put into appropriate recycling bins (cans/bottles, cardboard etc.)
  • Complies with broad agency policies and procedures
  • Participation in Food Services staff meetings
  • Performs any other tasks as required or as assigned from time to time by the Director of Food Services or Cook

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year experience in a high volume food services environment, some experience in food preparation, use of commercial kitchen equipment preferably in a not for profit food services environment
  • A current or completed Public Health Food Handling Certificate
  • CPR/ First Aid Certificates acquired through a recognized course
  • Knowledge of WHMIS requirements and associated precautions in a commercial kitchen environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to maintain team work with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of socioeconomic and diverse backgrounds
  • Must demonstrate physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs to assist with organizing storage areas and deliveries

Working Conditions:

  • The Kitchen Assistant will normally work within a full commercial kitchen and cafeteria dining room environment involving the cleaning of commercial kitchen equipment including but not limited to stoves/grills, deep fryer, ovens, mixers, steam cooker and serving equipment, dish washer, etc.

Rate: $16.74 per hour (2024 rate)

Hours: May be called to cover a morning or evening shift between Monday – Sunday as needed.

Shifts 5 hours: Mornings 9:00am-2:00pm; or Evenings 3:30pm-8:30pm.
