About the Role

We are looking for a Relief Overnight Security Worker to provide replacement shift coverage on an as needed basis between the hours of 12:00 am midnight and 8:00 am, Monday to Sunday. The primary responsibility is to ensure the life safety and overnight security of the refugee clients in at any one of the three Sojourn House shelter facilities. The shelters provide emergency shelter to refugees in a work environment where all stakeholders observe an integrated anti-oppression, anti-racist, access and equity framework.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Ensures compliance with Fire Regulations/Emergency and agency overnight protocols and maintains high standards of hygiene, safety and security in the facility.
  2. Manage fire alarms, assist clients to evacuate the building, conduct rounds of the shelter to ensure safety, ensure exits are clear and doors secured.
  3. Identify any vandalism or criminal activity and monitor security cameras.
  4. Provides crisis management related to various population issues using de-escalation methods within a cross cultural and anti-racism approach.

Experience/ Education

  • Minimum three years' experience in a security environment is preferred.
  • Community college and/or training in Security program from a recognized institution is an asset.

Certifications, Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Current Ontario Private Security License required as per the Private and Investigative Services Act, 2005.
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate required, WHMIS an asset.
  • Punctual, self-directed and demonstrated ability to mediate in a firm and non-threatening manner.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in conflict mediation, de-escalation and crisis management form a non punitive, culturally sensitive and anti-racist approach.
  • Developed analytical, assessment and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding and experience with facility life safety and security systems.
  • Well-developed team work and inter-personal skills, computer literacy in a Windows environment.
  • Position requires physical abilities for stair climbing up to eight floors in the event of a fire alarm or emergency evacuation.
  • Availability for overnight work required.
  • Fluency in second language is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Position requires the physical abilities for lifting (minimum up to 50 lbs.)

Hours: On call, as needed, variable shifts: 12:00am – 8am, 11:00pm – 7:00am, 10:00pm – 6:00am, Monday-Sunday
