Salary:

The Director of Employment and Training is accountable to the Chief Executive Officer and an integral member of the director team. Performing duties in accordance with the We'koqma'q L'nue'kati's strategic plan, the Director is responsible for success in developing economic and employment opportunities and developing the opportunities for community members to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA's) for success as employees or entrepreneurs.

The Director of Employment and Training will provide administrative leadership for all aspects of employment and training initiatives to build capacity through economic development, training and development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES

  • Establishes objectives and guidelines for training and employment programs and services by collaborating with Band Administration.
  • Provides Administration with information on all aspects of employment operations and prepares reports to enable informed decisions.
  • Interacts with Membership and public relating to all aspects of training and employment.
  • Leads the development of adult education curriculum, instructional and operational policies.
  • Creates and sustains strategic partnerships to advocate for training and employment of members.
  • Oversees and manages summer employment program.
  • Promotes partnership responsibilities with clients, employers, and other Administration departments.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with various community groups, unions, local employers, and training institutions.
  • Develops, implements and monitors programs and processes to promote quality training programs.
  • Develops and maintains consistent communications strategy to ensure each community member is aware of the available support for training, education and business development.
  • Accountable for monitoring and controlling budget allocations, including annual budget forecasts and projections.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related field, combined with ten years experience working in the education system (preferably in a First Nations community) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
  • Knowledge of First Nation education development, socio-economic conditions and culture of First Nation communities.
  • Able to manage confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management abilities.
  • Knowledge of human resources management best practices including supervision.
  • Demonstrated competence in team building, conflict management and interpersonal effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to use good judgement in making decisions.
  • Able to work independently to meet projected timelines.
  • Able to apply creative and innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate staff and take initiative.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Provide satisfactory clearance of criminal record check;
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license and reliable transportation.
