Position Summary:

  • This role will work closely with other teams across the organization to ensure data governance standards and best practices are being applied consistently across the organization, particularly as it relates to data quality, metadata management, data cataloguing, data lineage, data retention and disposition, access management.
  • Maintain and enhance data governance frameworks, policies, and procedures aligned with industry best practices and organizational goals.
  • Lead efforts to define data standards, data quality rules, and data classification to ensure consistent and accurate data across organization.
  • Monitor and enforce data governance policies, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and data protection requirements.
  • Responsible for data access management.
  • Contribute to the development of appropriate materials and conduct training sessions related to data governance best practices and technologies, Data Technology, Design and Maintenance
  • Design and implement data governance metrics and reporting mechanisms to track data quality, compliance, and governance effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with data owners and stewards on various aspects of the Data Governance Practice including but not limited to documenting business glossary, data catalogue, and data classification.
  • Provide inputs on the design and development of data models for data warehousing and cataloging projects.
  • Liaising with Decision Support and Information Technology regarding the development of new information and data governance related applications, including requirements validation and testing.
  • Collaborate with team to implement data governance tools and technologies and ensure their effective utilization for data governance purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with users across the organization to design, build and maintain data governance strategy
  • Work with data owners and stewards to ensure the data governance system complies with target state. This includes participation in the Data Governance Committee.
  • Develop, design and maintain data governance metrics and reporting.
  • Create, monitor and maintain documentation including data catalogues and classifications in appropriate tools.

  • Expected to take a leadership role for Data Governance initiatives.
  • Collaborate with all business areas including IT and other members of Decision Support.
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt language for non-technical colleagues.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders at various levels of the organization to drive data governance adoption and advocate for best practices.
  • Must be able to adapt approach for each user group.
  • Must use non-technical language and approach for non-technical audience.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including IT, legal, and Business Intelligence Analytics to ensure alignment with data governance initiatives.
  • Solutions should be built with future development and needs in mind in accordance with overall strategy.
  • Expected to identify alternate solutions for a problem and include the pros and cons of each.
  • An outcome-oriented, system thinking, approach to solving sophisticated and often ambiguous problems to generate reusable solutions required.
  • Identify gaps in user knowledge and proactively make suggestions of how to best bridge gap.
  • Understand business area priorities and key measures.
  • Able to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Able to change priorities with minimal notice.
  • Self identifies when additional resources are required to meet deadlines.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline and 4+ years of proven experience in the data domain, with a focus on data governance, data management, or related roles.
  • Certifications in data governance (e.g., DAMA Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP), Data Governance and Stewardship) are highly desirable.
  • Experience in developing and implementing data governance strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Proven track record of successfully driving data governance initiatives within complex organizational environments.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Extensive knowledge of data governance concepts, frameworks, industry best practices, tools and technologies that have been acquired through previous working experience.
  • Existing knowledge base with data privacy regulations (e.g., PHIPA) and data security practices.
  • Experience with Data Governance Tools such as Microsoft Purview.
