Salary: $20.00 per hour

Hours: 35 hours/week

Status: Full-time, Temporary (16 weeks)

Position Summary

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a junior Communications Specialist for a temporary 16-week summer term. This individual will be working on projects both for OICR and the Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Network (3CTN). This position is an opportunity to learn about science communication, the fields of cancer research and clinical trials and practice turning complex ideas into meaningful information for diverse audiences, including the millions of people affected by cancer.

3CTN is a pan-Canadian initiative to improve the efficiency and quality of academic clinical trials in Canada. Hosted by OICR, the 3CTN Coordinating Centre supports a network of cancer centres across Canada. (https://3ctn.ca/)

Position Responsibilities

  • Support the development and production of communication materials to build awareness and understanding of OICR and supportive programs among key audiences
    • Write and edit stories for OICR News and materials such as letters, news releases, website pages, speeches and, reports using knowledge of editorial principles and standards
    • Create written and visual content for social media (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube)
    • Update corporate websites (OICR, OICR News and 3CTN)
    • Support the design and creation of engaging visuals and materials to help communicate OICR's strategy and impact to a wide range of audiences, such as templates, booklets, brochures, fact sheets
    • Apply best practices, common etiquette and adhere to OICR Communication Strategy, policies and guidelines
    • Exercise judgement in developing materials and working with multiple parties, both internal and external, keeping in mind information may be sensitive, embargoed or not yet published
  • Conduct communications research, monitor performance of OICR publications and communication tools
  • Contribute to team projects, providing strategic communications expertise for internal and external communications and corporate program objectives
  • Additional opportunities in government outreach, video production, media relations and design would be available depending on interests and skillset of the candidate
  • Other duties as may be assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism or recognized equivalent
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office is essential
  • Fluency in major social media platforms (especially LinkedIn, X, Instagram, YouTube).
  • Fast learner and ability to work with complex information in a fast-paced environment
