Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Professional Practice, the Clinical Scholars are experienced nurses with frontline experience who are employed in supernumerary positions to provide formalized mentorship to newly graduated nurses to support their transition into the workforce. Types of new nurses include nursing graduates, internationally educated nurses (IENs) and nurses looking to enhance their competencies and skills (upskill). The Clinical Scholars are responsible for the successful implementation of the program mandate across multiple units of Oakville, Milton and Georgetown hospitals, by supporting novice learners in their practice and integration into care areas in accordance with college standards, policies and procedures, and in collaboration with the clinical teams. The Clinical Scholars guide and support the novice learner in providing high quality, safe care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. The Clinical Scholars serve as a liaison and conduit between novice learners and between unit leadership, Professional Practice and Operations.

  • Have the ability to provide on-unit support for above noted groups and professional development activities at all three hospital sites
  • Supporting unit leadership in competency evaluations, reporting concerns to unit leadership.
  • Participate in data collection and reporting requirements as per ministry requirements for the Clinical Scholars program
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Three (3) years related health care experience
  • Current certificate in Basic Life Support by the Heart and Stroke Foundation
  • Experience in frontline care in a hospital clinical setting and competencies to provide training and mentorship to newly graduated nurses, confirmed by the participating organization's Professional Practice team.
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies,
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to have difficult yet supportive conversations aligning with our values of compassion, accountability and respect.
  • Previous experience teaching, working with clinical learners, and/or precepting,
  • Demonstrated leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to collaborate across various levels of leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to: respond positively to change, work independently, organize and set priorities, problem solve, develop systems which create efficient workflows, meet timelines and lead continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication (using various and creative methods to maintain connection with workers at multiple sites)
  • Excellent analytical and data management skills
  • Highly proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Proven high level of maturity, discretion and seen as a role model
  • Ability to maintain impartiality, objectivity, diplomacy and confidentiality, including an understanding and appreciation for cultural, religious and other individual beliefs
  • Demonstrated evidence of commitment to continuous learning through pursuit of educational endeavours
  • Satisfactory attendance
  • Exceptionally patient and caregiver focused and ability to communicate effectively with patients and families
