Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager, Communications, the External Communications Specialist is responsible for implementing external communications initiatives and tactics that elevate the college profile and complement existing marketing, recruitment, media relations, and external relations strategies.

The incumbent will support media relations and corporate content development including stories for the external website and the college's social media platforms and evaluate and report on metrics/KPIs. They will also need to ensure that the College's stories, news, and programming activities successfully reach target audiences locally, nationally, and internationally through appropriate traditional media outlets, specialty publications, and non-traditional communications channels. Raising the profile and supporting the reputation management of the college and its stakeholders is central to this position. Innovative, strategic thinking is key.

The successful candidate will excel with External Communications and Creative Storytelling, from developing story line-ups, features, and highlight, in addition to implementing creative approaches to telling the Bow Valley College, such as podcasts, videos, and similar content.

Additional deliverables will include maintaining key Reporting, Evaluation, and Metrics to assist in identifying benchmarks and measures of success, as well as making direct contributions to Media Relations and Reputation Management.

Qualifications

  • Post -secondary Diploma (preference for Public Relations, Journalism, or Communications)
  • 5 years of related experience
  • Issues management skills are essential
  • Knowledge of and experience within social media platforms
  • Knowledge of newsroom practices and interview techniques are required
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and editing skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and professionalism when interacting with reporters and editors, as well as college employees and students, government representatives, and business leaders
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered
