Summary:
AGAT Laboratories is currently hiring for a Soil Mechanics Specialist. This is a senior position in our Geotechnical laboratory in Calgary. This position is given direction from the Operations Manager. The successful candidate will be one that has the ability to work independently on laboratory activities and is responsible for maintaining the majority of the instruments, monitoring quality control and managing projects in the soil mechanics laboratory, analyzing soil mechanics and geomechanics data and communicating with clients.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design static and dynamic soil mechanics testing programs with clients.
  • Calibrate, operate, maintain, and trouble shoot high level soil mechanics experiments.
  • Implement and manage instrument preventative maintenance programs.
  • Train, mentor and manage technical analysts.
  • Compile, verify and validate accurate data records.
  • Review and report results.
  • Meet quality assurance and turn around specifications.
  • Provide technical and instrumental support to operations.
  • Follow all quality control and standard operation procedures.
  • Assist management in improving efficiencies throughout the operations.
  • Develop and review SOP's.
  • Research new methodologies and participate in R&D projects.
  • Ensure adherence to all AGAT health and safety policies, procedures, guidelines and requirements.
  • Present technical papers internally and at conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Engineering degree required in either Civil or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 1-5+ years' experience, preferably in a soil mechanics or geomechanics laboratory setting.
  • Currently hold a PEng or EIT designation in Alberta or other province. If an EIT designiation is held, the successful applicant will be eligible for full registration within 4 years.
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics theory, geomechanics theory and geomechanical earth models.
  • Petrophysical knowledge is considered an asset.
  • Basic programming in Python, Matlab or similar language is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work with and manage lab technicians.
  • Able to operate and maintain analytical instruments.
  • Knowledge of full laboratory processes.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills conveyed in a pleasant and professional manner when interacting with employees, management, and customers.

Work Environment:
This position requires a person to stand, sit and lift throughout the shift in a laboratory environment. Extended periods of sitting at a computer are required. Manual dexterity is required to perform repetitive tasks. PPE is required where applicable.
