ANEW's Family Program, which is based on a sober living model, is looking for a skilled candidate who will provide individuals coming out of treatment with the support, skills, and information they require to function successfully as a family. Individuals who are referred to our program are either single parent or couples who are working towards reunification with their child(ren) and therefore will be living as a whole family unit with 24/7 staffing supports. The goal of the Mental Health & Addiction Support Worker is to deliver therapeutic support to the family while referring them to external supports and working in collaboration with their safety support network. This position is responsible for promoting prevention strategies, intervention, aftercare referrals, and ensure follow-up services to individuals, families and community concerning mental health and addictions. The Mental Health and Addictions Worker's responsibility is to provide community mental health supports, adhere to ANEW's policies and procedures, including those that relate to client and staff safety, quality improvement and risk management. Programming will be home-based, culturally relevant, and address the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of community members who may require professional mental health and addictions counselling.

Candidates also have the option to work relief/on-call for the main centre if they are wanting extra hours.

DAILY ROUTINE/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop of a trusting and therapeutic relationship with the individual and the community;
  • Screen and assess, and refer clients to external professional counselling services;
  • Provide “brief intervention” to clients requiring mental health counselling services;
  • Teaching of living skills, social skills and parenting skills (if applicable) through role modeling or appropriate behaviour and be able to assess client deficits and strengths and use systematic plans of instruction, teaching methods and approaches to transfer information and skill to participants;
  • Document and maintain cases within an electronic medical records system;
  • Monthly documentation related to participants including service planning, reviews, plans, etc.;
  • Activity planning that involves participants in groups that meet the recreational, educational and/or therapeutic needs;
  • Maintain structure, consistency, and effective follow-up on house rules, routines, and appropriate therapeutic interventions as required;
  • Counseling skills that utilize problem-solving, de-escalation, goal-setting and preventative interventions with clients in either a 1:1 or group scenario;
  • Develop strong partnerships with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Provide follow-up to individuals returning from treatment and ensure ongoing follow-up care and counselling through collaborating with external mental health counsellors;
  • Plan, organize and/or develop, and facilitate and/or implement home-based and culturally relevant mental health prevention and promotion programming within the program;
  • Assist in the planning, organizing, and implementation of Traditional Services within the clinical setting;
  • Remain within the “Scope of Practice” of Child & Youth Care Counselors;
  • Providing all participants with a sense of safety, acceptance and nurturance;
  • Perform additional tasks or duties as directed by the Leadership team

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree or diploma in a Human Services Field (i.e. Addictions & Mental Health, Social Work, Psychology, etc.) is highly recommended;
  • Current (6 months or newer) and Clear Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Clearance;
  • Current (6 months or newer) Alberta Child Welfare (Intervention) Record Check;
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Training;
  • Valid Driver's License and Clear Drivers Abstract as well as $2 million liability coverage;
  • Strong interpersonal skills that bridge the distance with individuals that may have a resistance to relationships, different morals/values and alternative lifestyle choices;
  • Knowledge of family dynamics, addiction, domestic violence and mental health disorders;
  • Excellent knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Agreements;
  • Non-judgmental manner and strong personal boundaries;
  • Demonstrates good writing and communication skills;
  • Experience in working with diverse cultural and religious communities;
  • Understanding of the impacts of intergenerational trauma and the Indigenous culture/history;
  • Understanding of the Client Centred, Circle of Courage model, Medicine wheel and Milieu-Based Therapy philosophies of treatment/interventions;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous culture, beliefs and traditions;
  • Must be flexible to attend mandatory training.
