ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multiservice organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, education, youth development and employment services.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Tropicana Community Services is looking for volunteer tutors for our Increase Your Success tutoring program. If you are a high-school student, post-secondary student, teacher, or professor (current or retired) and wish to aid us in supporting students in grades 1-12 in Mathematics, Language Arts, and Science, then this may be the role for you!

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Increase Your Success tutoring program offers academic assistance via one-on-one Zoom sessions and on-site group sessions, for Mathematics, Science, and Language Arts (English).

Report to: Education Program Supervisor

Location: Zoom and/or on-site at our 1385 Huntingwood Drive, Scarborough location.

Software Requirements: Microsoft Office, Zoom

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support each student through a pre-assessment session, to build a learning plan tailored to their needs.
  • Teach students effective study and time management techniques.
  • Provide students with the support, resources, and tools that will help them achieve academic success throughout their primary and high school years and beyond.
  • Help students build strong studying and learning techniques.
  • Build self-confidence, self-respect, and enthusiasm for education.
  • Help with school-assigned homework.
  • Follow their learning plan, allowing students to learn at their own pace, and focus on any difficulty areas.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Must have minimum high school education (or in the process of completion).
  • Strong knowledge in Mathematics, Language, and Science.

Work Experience

  • 0-1 years of tutoring experience in Mathematics, Language, and Science (preferred)

Certifications

  • N/A

Language & Communication Skills

  • Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • Good presentation skills

Transferable Skills

  • A self-starter who is honest, analytical, organized, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to respect and value diversity and inclusion· Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain patience when supporting students
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of the organization
  • Ability to tutor via Zoom (for those applying for online tutoring)

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • On-site/Remote

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Required to attend volunteer orientation and training
  • Minimum one-term commitment for either the online tutoring (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm-5:00pm) and/or onsite tutoring (Saturdays from 10:00am-1:00pm).

8-Week Terms:

  • Fall Term 2023: September 30 – November 25
  • Spring Term 2023: March 30 – May 18
  • Winter Term 2023: January 13 – March 9

Schedule:

  • One-on-one Online Sessions: via Zoom every Tuesday and Thursday from one of the time slots below:
    • 4:00pm-5:00 pm; 4:15pm-5:15pm; 4:30pm-5:30pm
  • On-site Group (6:1) Sessions: every Saturday from 10:00am-1:00pm with scheduled breaks.
