Autism Support Workers-Summer Camp 2024

Multiple Positions-Summer Camp Program

Contract: June 24-August 30, 2024

Hours of Work: Up to 34 hours per week, Mon – Fri 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

The Role:

Summer Camp counsellor will work with children, youth, and adults with Autism in group/camp settings, assisting in the development of communication, social, and life skills. They facilitate outdoor adventure programming, oversee daily activities, and ensure operations align with health and safety standards. report to the senior camp counsellor

Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Greet participants at designated locations each morning.
    • Provide supervision and support to participants in camp activities throughout the day.
    • Offer verbal prompting for basic personal care needs as required (e.g., bathroom, changing, feeding).
    • Implement strategies outlined in Individual Recreation Plans.
    • Advocate for participants' inclusion in activities and encourage social interactions.
    • Monitor participants' engagement and make modifications as needed.
    • Foster friendships and ensure participants feel welcome and safe.
    • Manage various behaviours, including physical and verbal aggression.
      • Maintain open communication with parents/caregivers, camp staff, and supervisors.
      • Prioritize preventative measures and problem-solve as necessary.
      • Conduct debriefs with parents/caregivers to provide clear feedback on participants' experiences.
      • Provide assistance to the camp leader in managing behaviours within the group if required.
      • Implement High Five principles
      • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

      • Working towards Secondary School Graduation Diploma or Post-Secondary courses/degree/diploma in Education, Social Work, Child and Youth Work, Recreation and Leisure, Disability Studies, or related discipline.
      • BMS, NCVI, and/or training specific to Autism Spectrum Disorder or similar training is an asset.
      • Ability to perform light lifting.
      • Completion of a swimming test to determine supervision ability in the water.
      • Willingness to learn and practice blocking techniques for physical aggression and strategies for verbal aggression.

Working Conditions:

      • An outdoor environment with swimming and arts and crafts activities.
      • Use of CPI training; loud environment with sensory stimuli.
