Job Summary

As a part of Calgary Economic Development's Marketing & Communications team, the Communication Specialist serves as a strategic advisor who develops content with a compelling voice for CED on key initiatives including research studies, executive communications, and business development. The Communications Specialist will report to, and work closely with, our Director of Communications.

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for content creation, namely writing and editing content. This role also includes supporting media relations and social media as required.

This is a 14-Month Full-Time Contract.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communication team to understand, evaluate, develop and deliver effective communication plans.
  • Write, edit, and upload content for key CED initiatives including research reports, executive communications, editorial/sponsored content and promotional materials
  • Ensure corporate compliance with brand graphic and editorial standards, including CED's marketing and promotional materials, advertising, and electronic media.
  • Act as a corporate and city brand ambassador within the organization and with Calgary's other promotional agencies; develops consistent approach and tools to maintain brand integrity.
  • Build strong relationships with creative and digital agencies, internal and external partners.
  • Support media relations and social media content delivery

You are a communications generalist who not only develops programs to build awareness and engagement but can speak directly with some of our targeted audiences. You utilize a strategic approach, critical thinking, and strong problem-solving skills to arrive at creative and innovative marketing and communications solutions.

You are collaborative; a multitasker who can pivot to supporting CED events that promote Calgary's value proposition as the location of choice for people and business.

You have a passion for our city and are excited at the prospect of working on projects that build on the energy of our community.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations or Communications.

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in a directly related area during which professional capability has been clearly demonstrated.
  • Experience working with business stakeholders, sponsors, and government officials.
  • Experience writing for a variety of documents such as articles, news releases, presentations, and speeches.
  • Experience dealing with creative and digital agencies, the media, social media, event planning and overall communication and marketing.
  • Solid background in building, communicating, and implementing communications plans and exposure to corporate communications in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strategic approach, critical thinking, and strong problem-solving skills to arrive at creative and innovative marketing and communications solutions.
  • Sound relationship building skills and demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with peers, other departments, and stakeholder groups.
  • Extensive understanding of marketing and communications principles.
  • Strategic sensibilities as it relates to content ideation and delivery.
  • Solid writing experience, including - but not limited to – articles, long & short form, speeches, presentations, and press releases.
  • Ability to engage with, pitch and build relationships with media & writers.
  • Presentation development skills to create and deliver concise messages.
  • Exceptional editing and proof-reading skills.
  • Savvy social media skills.
  • Detail focused and strong project, event, and budget management skills.
  • High level technical knowledge with Windows XP, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with design applications like Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Acrobat, Dreamweaver, and using CMS systems like Drupal is considered an asset.
