CED administers the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund (OCIF), a wholly-owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary created in 2018 as a catalyst to attract investment, drive innovation, and spur transformative economic development in the city. OCIF has made a wide range of public and private investments that drive economic growth, job creation, and ecosystem development, positioning Calgary to lead digital transformation across our key sectors.

Job Summary:

As part of CED's Communications team, the Manager, Communications will be responsible for planning and executing communications and media relations plans and developing content for the OCIF brand. This strategic role involves working closely with the OCIF team to be its primary storyteller. Functional responsibilities include developing communications and media relations plans, writing and editing content across various channels for internal and external audiences, and providing media relations and event support.

The Manager, Communications will act as a conduit between CED's communications team and the OCIF team to ensure OCIF's business objectives are met with strategic communications and uphold both the OCIF and CED brands and reputation.

This role requires superior writing and communications skills, an understanding of the economy and political environment, and emotional intelligence.

This is a 1 year full-time contract.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute communications and media relations plans for OCIF, ensuring they align with business objectives and communications goals
  • Work closely with CED's communications team to align on key messaging and editorial calendars for social media, newsroom stories and media announcements
  • Be the primary storyteller for OCIF at CED by writing OCIF beneficiary stories, website content, press releases for funding announcements, speaking notes for key spokespeople at events, Board communications, the corporate Annual report, presentations and more
  • Coordinate editorial content with CED's social media team both daily and for major events
  • Contribute organic content about OCIF for social media channels with CED's marketing and communications team
  • Ensure constant improvement and superior delivery of communications and media relations plans
  • Work with Director, VPs, and CEO on speaking notes, presentations, briefing docs and key messages
  • Occasionally, work with other departments within CED to weave OCIF messaging into communications pieces
  • Assess existing communications platforms and balance new trends with resourcing.
  • Oversees development of editorial content for newsroom and bi-weekly newsletter to ensure corporate compliance with brand graphic and editorial standards.
  • Meet with other departments to collaborate and identify communications needs on major projects.
  • Create communications plans and oversee activation on major research studies, business development/Talent events and CED signature events.
  • Write content for major CED projects (e.g., Calgary in the New Economy refresh)
  • Contributes to marketing and communications social content calendar and keeps team apprised of internal and external projects.
  • Coordinates editorial content with social team both daily and for major events.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related

Experience:

Minimum 8-10 years of experience in Communications or Media Relations. Membership with professional organizations (IABC / CPRS) or being multilingual is considered an asset.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience in communications strategy and planning
  • Experience creating editorial content and coordinating communications across social media platforms
  • Proven project management skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with politically sensitive and confidential information
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; detail oriented and structured
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
