Purpose:

The Associate will be an integral part of the Transportation team; working under the Practice Lead to consult with clients, perform examinations, complete documentation reviews, and conduct various safety, planning and engineering analyses, including the assessment of winter maintenance processes and anti-icing/de-icing treatment chemicals. The Associate will be responsible for preparing engineering reports and communicating findings in a clear, concise, efficient and professional manner.

Job Summary:

The Transportation Engineer, Associate will report directly to the Practice Lead, Transportation, collaborating with other subject matter experts to consult with clients, perform examinations, testing, and analysis, and prepare technical reports and findings in a clear, concise, efficient, and professional manner. The key areas of focus will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist senior staff in the management, maintenance and growth of our transportation safety, engineering and planning market across Canada. Specifically, focusing on the eastern region of Canada.
  • Perform in-depth safety investigations for post-collisions/incidents with a proactive safety or vision zero approach for the potential improvement of existing or future facilities.
  • Perform planning, operational, maintenance and design investigations for various transportation projects.
  • Assist senior staff with transportation planning projects, including writing technical memos or reports, participating in public engagement sessions, coordinating and tracking, and achieving project milestones.
  • Perform site examinations for collision/incident investigations in our eastern region.
  • Oversee and assist in the preparation of technical drawings and simulations, including field measurements, sketches, technical calculations and other data.
  • Prepare technical memos, reports, assessment summaries and presentations based on sound investigations and analysis.
  • Assist senior staff with the management of projects according to client-approved scopes of work and deliver high-quality reports on time and within budget.
  • Effectively communicate investigation and analysis findings to colleagues and others.
  • Develop an understanding of the core values of the firm and a familiarization with the strategic plan.
  • Review plans and specifications to determine whether they meet relevant transportation regulations, guidelines, standards, policies and practices.
  • Work toward technical independence, with a goal of providing expert testimony in court.
  • Participate in the development and growth of our existing client base.
  • Participate in client interactions, industry events, marketing activities and seminars.

Requirements:

  • Should hold, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in transportation engineering (postgraduate degree is preferred).
  • Have a minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience (or a post-graduate degree) working in a transportation engineering environment, preferably in transportation safety, engineering and planning and in a consulting environment in Canada or outside of Canada.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of prevailing transportation guidelines, standards and regulations including, but not limited to, the Ontario Traffic Manuals, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads, HTA and other TAC and Ministry of Transportation publications.
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in the eastern region or elsewhere in Canada.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of road safety programs including, but not limited to, network screening, safety reviews or audits and collision modification factors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of roadway design, maintenance, operations, transportation planning process or policy development.
  • Knowledge of roadway operations, regular maintenance and winter maintenance, including policies, standards, best practices and treatment materials will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in the legal or litigation field would be an asset.
  • Excellent technical writing skills are a must.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients.
  • Strong presentation skills are an asset.
  • Have a working knowledge of current transportation engineering software, including SynchroTM.
  • Expected to work from the 30 Forensic Engineering office 6-8 times per month. Flexible work conditions may be considered depending on potential candidates' current location.
