The City of Brooks requires one (1) Heavy Duty Mechanic in the Public Works/Parks & Utilities Department.

Job Details & Responsibilities:

The City of Brooks requires a Heavy Duty Mechanic in the Works & Utility Services Division. This position will report to the Public Works & Utility Services Manager and is responsible for supervising operators with respect to the Preventative Maintenance Program. This is a permanent position involved with all aspects of maintenance and repair of the Town's fleet equipment as assigned. The successful candidate must have excellent mechanical skills and familiarity with the operation, maintenance, and repair of small engines, fleet, and heavy-duty equipment. The candidate must possess the necessary skills to troubleshoot mechanical systems, including administration skills, to complete supervisory duties such as budget creation and review.

This position is responsible for the continued development, administration, and implementation of a Preventative Maintenance Program. This included remaining current on regulations and safety standards. This role is also responsible for maintaining records in accordance with government regulations, assisting with the fleet replacement program, purchasing and inventory control, and overall management of the City Shop within their area of responsibility according to the City of Brooks' policies and procedures. This position deals with the public and other team members and must conduct themselves professionally and courteously. This Heavy Duty Mechanic position is based on a forty-hour work week from Monday to Friday and may require some weekend and overtime work as required.

Demonstrated ability in the following areas:

  1. Maintenance and repair of all equipment associated with municipal operations;
  2. Experience in preventative maintenance programs;
  3. Ability to competently perform welding operations and
  4. Ability to institute proper purchasing and inventory controls for all parts stocking operations.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Heavy Duty Mechanic License/Certification;
  2. Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) Certification;
  3. Valid Class 3 Driver's License with Q Endorsement;
  4. TDG Certification;
  5. Clean driver's abstract and criminal background check including a vulnerable sector check;
  6. Standard First Aid is preferred;
  7. Proficient in Microsoft Office;
  8. Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload, including the ability to tolerate frequent interruptions and still meet deadlines;
  9. Attention to detail and strong prioritizing and multi-tasking skills;
  10. Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills;
  11. The Heavy Duty mechanic shall supply all tools required in the normal day-to-day operations of the position.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The City of Brooks offers a competitive salary and benefits package with this position falling within the scope of the Collective Agreement between the City of Brooks and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1032.
  • This is a full-time position. There are possible weekends and overtime hours of work. The Collective Agreement, including wages, can be found online at www.brooks.ca.
