OpenMedia is looking for an experienced and self-motivated campaigner who wants to lead our
work fighting for a better Internet.
If you have at least two years of advocacy experience, excellent writing skills, and a passion for
using people power to create Overton window movement and policy change, then this is the job
for you!
About OpenMedia
OpenMedia is Canada's largest grassroots digital rights community, with over 370,000 members
that fight to protect and expand the possibilities of the open Internet. At its best, we believe the
Internet can be one of the most powerful liberatory forces humanity has created; but too often, it
is being weaponized to be an unprecedented tool for surveillance, control and polarisation for
profit. We fight for an Internet where our access is fast and affordable, our right to privacy and
control of our data is respected, and where free expression is the default mode of the web.
We are a lean digital rights group that punches well above our weight. We create
community-driven campaigns that engage, educate, and empower people to be heard by policy
makers and protect what is good about the Internet, and while improving what is going wrong.
We're strictly nonpartisan, and lobby and inform every political party as best we can.
We are looking for a practical idealist who does not want just any ordinary job; they want to be a
key part of fixing the web.
We work primarily in Canada, with some coalition work in the US, to:
● Fight restrictions on our online freedom of expression and access to information;
● Empower Internet users, not corporations or governments;
● Break digital walled gardens and corporate monopolies;
● Stand up to mass surveillance;
● Stop attacks on encryption;
● Fight for user control of our data;
● Create equal, affordable universal access to the Internet;
● Fix our broken cell phone market;
● Defend Net Neutrality;
● Expand researcher access to study online platforms;
● Push for a less centralized, more user-driven web;
● And much, much more!
Responsibilities:
The core job is informing, motivating and representing our 370,000 supporters to take action on
the digital issues that matter most to them, and expanding our community to new groups of
people who care about the Internet and want to help shape its future.

We are looking for an experienced people mobilizer with significant experience designing and
implementing successful campaigns. While digital issues policy experience is an asset, if you do
not know an MVNO from the RTR, that is ok: what is most important is your understanding of
building and acting on a theory of change, and understanding what lands with and motivates
ordinary Canadians.
The successful candidate will work closely with our Executive Director to turn our policy asks
and community energy into long-term campaigns that get media attention and force our
policymakers to engage inconvenient realities of how the Internet works, and what people need
from it.
The key responsibilities are:
● Developing powerful and creative campaigns that give people a voice and put pressure
on decision makers;
● Writing and test clear, impactful action and fundraiser email copy;
● Sending out those emails using our CRM, including loading, targeting and testing;
● Creating and testing action pages, including petitions, click-to-call and one-click
messaging campaigns;
● Monitoring our campaign performance and make data-driven improvements to our
language and methodology;
● Engaging and collaborating with peers and allies outside OpenMedia on campaigns of
shared interest;
● Collaborate with OpenMedia's advisory board and leadership on identifying key Internet
needs and translating them into specific policy asks;
● Meeting with MPs, media and policy makers to drive these asks home.
This position is based remotely, with flexible work hours between EST and PST. Candidates
must be eligible to work in Canada, and have access to a reliable, video-capable Internet
connection. OpenMedia is a unionised workplace, and successful candidates will be placed in
touch with their BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) representative.
Skills and experience:

You MUST have:
● At least 2 years of prior campaigning experience – we are looking for someone who can
hit the ground running;
● Past experience with advocating for people's fundamental right to freedom of expression
and access to information;
● Ability to spot campaigning opportunities, and develop realistic and tangible
campaign strategies;
● Experience writing and testing email and web copy;
● Prior experience using a CRM to load and send emails;
● A strong self-motivating work ethic that fits with the small remote team experience;
● Excellent organization and communication skills, able to facilitate collaboration across
the team.

The following skills are not required, but are significant assets:
● Familiarity with issues related to Internet policy and digital rights;
● Familiarity with academic or legal consideration of the right to freedom of expression, the
privacy, and access to information, and their key roles in democracy;
● Background in analytics;
● Copyediting experience;
● Experience networking and partnering with academics, experts and civil society groups;
● Media training and experience, and/or public speaking experience;
● Experience organising live protests and/or stunts.

To apply:
● Tell us about your passion for defending and promoting the digital rights of ordinary
Canadians in 200 words or less. This is a crucial opportunity to distinguish your
application from many others;
● Please provide a *brief* cover letter that shows how you meet the requirements in the
‘must have' section (bulleted lists are fine!);
● Submit your resume;
● Please provide two writing examples – ideally campaigning emails or action page copy
(Links are fine);
● If there are any accommodations that we can provide to make our hiring process more
accessible for you, or if you have any ideas for improving our hiring process, please
contact us at [email protected]
directly. We would be happy to do our best to set you up for success;
● We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. If you have questions about timing,
please get in touch. We will remove the posting when the position has been filled.
We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce and encourage applications from
Indigenous people, women, LGBTQIA+ people, people of colour, and people with disabilities.
We are an entirely remote workplace, providing the flexibility to work from any location with a
reliable Internet connection.
**Not certain your credentials are a 100% match with the position description? Please apply anyway!**

We are looking to find the right person for our team, with relevant skills and experience
– not a mandatory checklist. We are a small, flexible team in which every person makes a huge
contribution; for the right candidate, we will consider adjusting some parameters of the position.
Compensation
This is a permanent position with a three-month probation period. Salary is commensurate with
experience, but we are able to hire in the range of $65-$75k per year.
