Regional Fertility Program is hiring a Full time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) role located at our Calgary location.

The Licensed Practical Nurse uses professional knowledge, technical skill and clinical judgment in providing quality client care. The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for providing care in the General Fertility Clinic and in the Procedure and Recovery Rooms.

Primary Purpose of the Position

  • Provide direct patient care in a specialized medical practice including infertility clinics, procedure and recovery room duties, assisting with minor surgical procedures and assessing and managing patients on the phone.
  • Work independently within clinic protocols to assess patients, interpret test results and manage treatments.

Education

  • Graduation from a Licensed Practical Nurse Program.

Registration Requirements

  • Current College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) registration.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

Applied Experience

  • Previous experience in gynecology preferred.
  • Previous experience in fertility an asset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect detailed patient histories (objective and subjective) and ensure proper details are communicated and documented appropriately.
  • Obtain and review patient results.
  • Act on patient results in accordance with Regional Fertility Program protocols and standards of care and LPN scope of practice.
  • Tracking and reviewing critical patient results and acting on results in accordance with Clinic protocols and standards of care and LPN scope of practice.
  • Arrange appointments and testing as directed by clinic physicians.
  • Document all nursing activities on patient record.
  • Report appropriate patient concerns to physician as needed.
  • Identify potential and actual learning needs of the patient.
  • Plan patient teaching in accordance with patient needs.
  • Provide detailed teaching to patients in person and by telephone.
  • Evaluate patient response to procedures/teaching and modify care plan as indicated.
  • Coordinate urgent off-site medical procedures with appropriate hospital departments and ensures required post-procedural results are tracked and appropriately acted upon.
    • Methotrexate.
    • Dilatation and curettage.
  • Participate in the delivery of nursing care to pre/post op patients.
    • Admission.
    • Discharge.
    • IV initiation and discontinuation.
    • Monitoring including vital signs.
    • Catheter removal.
    • Staple removal.
    • Intramuscular injection.
  • Assist physician with procedures such as surgical sperm retrieval, paracentesis, endometrial biopsy, etc.
  • Perform limited transabdominal ultrasound for embryo transfer procedures.
  • Perform nursing procedures and carry out physician orders in accordance with Clinic protocols and standards of care and LPN scope of practice.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff.
  • Participate in a collaborative practice with other members of the health care team.
  • Assist other clinic divisions with the delivery of care of specified programs
    • Vitrified donor oocyte program, satellite monitoring program
  • Participate in regular nursing and department meetings
  • Participate in research programs as directed by medical staff.
  • Participate in continuous quality assurance by collecting information as requested.
  • Identify professional learning needs as indicated by CLPNA.
  • Accept responsibility for own professional development of evidenced-based practice.
