Position Overview: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Engineering to join our dynamic team. As the Head of Engineering, you will be a technical authority and coordinate internal and external resources to maintain and develop our novel and industry-leading marine battery solutions. You will lead the design and development of new products, as well as the maintenance and continuous product improvement of existing products. Your primary responsibility will be to oversee a cross-disciplinary team consisting of Mechanical Designers, Electrical Engineers, Hardware Electronics Specialists, and Embedded Software Engineers.

This role is based in Vancouver Canada, reports directly to the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and offers an exciting opportunity to drive innovation in the marine battery industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Leadership: Serve as the technical authority and provide guidance on all engineering-related matters. Together with the compliance manager ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  2. Product Design and Development: Lead the design and development process for new marine battery products, from conceptualization to production. Drive innovation and introduce cutting-edge technologies to enhance product performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  3. Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Oversee the maintenance and troubleshooting activities for existing marine battery products. Collaborate with the team to identify and resolve technical issues, implementing effective solutions to optimize product performance and customer satisfaction.
  4. Team Management: Manage and lead a cross-disciplinary engineering team, fostering collaboration and promoting a culture of continuous learning and professional development. Set clear goals, provide mentorship, and ensure the team's success in achieving project objectives.
  5. Project Management: Provide input to, and collaborate with, project managers to develop and execute project plans, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality products. Coordinate with other departments, such as Product Management and Manufacturing, to align priorities and resources for successful project execution.
  6. Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with stakeholders from different departments, such as Sales, Marketing, and Quality Assurance, to understand market requirements, gather feedback, and align engineering efforts with business goals.
  7. Technical Expertise: Stay updated with the latest advancements in marine battery technology, emerging trends, and industry standards. Share knowledge and expertise with the team to foster innovation and maintain a competitive edge.
  8. Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Identify potential risks and challenges in product development and implement mitigation strategies to ensure successful outcomes.
  9. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate engineering documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and project reports. Provide regular progress updates to the CTO, CEO, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience in a technical leadership role, preferably in the design, development, and industrialization of cross/disciplinary products. Specific experience with battery systems is an advantage.
  • Experience with the development of equipment for the maritime industry and the corresponding industry standards, relevant safety regulations, and type approval process with class societies is an advantage.
  • Strong background in electrical engineering, mechanical design, or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with a track record of successfully leading cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in product design and development, from concept to production.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Familiarity with relevant software tools and design software.
