The work of Good Shepherd is based on a fundamental belief in providing hope and restoring dignity to the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our community. Our services include emergency food and clothing; daily hot meals; emergency shelters for men, youth, families, women and children; transitional housing and education for homeless and street-involved youth; hospice palliative care; community mental health programs; and supportive housing programs.


This is a full-time position, working on-site from the Hamilton office -- will support our Hamilton, Toronto and Niagara locations.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officers, the Senior Advisor - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strives to enhance the dignity and quality of life of clients, tenants, co-workers and the broader community by providing leadership and collaborating at all levels of the Good Shepherd organization in creating safer, more inclusive and equity-driven employment and service environments across Good Shepherd.

You are a transformative leader who will shape, mentor, and advance the organizational framework for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. You will have experience and expertise in DEI to guide the strategic development and actualization of policies, programs, and initiatives. The advisor will collaborate with a dedicated team to drive and support strategic directions, fostering an environment that upholds the values of DEI at every organizational level.

Responsibilities of this role encompass offering strategic advice to senior leadership, leading DEI policy development and oversight, and fostering sustainable leadership development. The Senior Advisor will also spearhead training programs, engage with various stakeholders, and represent the organization in DEI forums. You will perform data analysis to assess DEI efforts, manage conflict resolution, and contribute to recruitment and retention strategies that underscore inclusivity. This role is crucial in promoting an inclusive organizational culture, serving as a pivotal resource for employees, and advocating for an environment where every individual's contributions are recognized and valued.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Post-secondary education, social sciences, social justice, human resources, business administration or related field combined with related experience
  • Several years' experience in a similar role in DEI work, with a proven track record in developing and implementing successful DEI programs and initiatives in a complex organization. Experience in a leadership or advisory role is preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of DEI concepts and issues, as well as related legislation and compliance requirements. Familiarity with current trends, best practices, and benchmarks in the field.
  • Understanding of Hamilton, Toronto and Niagara's diverse populations, including familiarity with the city's demographic trends and community dynamic and ability of leveraging this knowledge to foster an inclusive environment that respects and celebrates the diverse voices of all its residents, is strong asset.
  • Ability to provide strategic advice and recommendations to senior leadership on DEI matters and lead the development of the organization's DEI strategy.
  • Relatable interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to facilitate training, engage stakeholders, and represent the organization in various forums.
  • Strong data analysis skills to measure the effectiveness of DEI initiatives and make informed decisions based on quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Experience in handling sensitive DEI-related issues and conflicts with discretion and a constructive approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and coach individuals and teams in DEI practices.
  • High level of cultural intelligence and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Experience in collaborating with cross-functional teams and external partners to advance DEI objectives.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to oversee multiple DEI-related projects and initiatives.
  • Creative and innovative thinker with the ability to propose and implement effective DEI solutions.
  • A valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle as there will be travel between locations.
