Reporting to the Manager-Engineering Services, the Civil/Structural Engineer will provide in-house structural engineering, design, and detailing support, as part of a team responsible for the design and detailing of pre-engineered and modular steel buildings.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Performs structural analysis and engineering design for assigned projects, and reviews designs prepared by other members of the Structures design team.
  • Reviews, approves, and authenticates as required, detailed structural drawings issued for fabrication, shop, and field assembly purposes in compliance with applicable Structures' design notes, project documents, and pertaining Canadian National and provincial building codes (NBC), and industry standards (S16, S136, W59).
  • Performs code and technical reviews of all bid estimates and production drawings.
  • Provides analysis and design support for bid estimates and final detailed design, including foundation reactions, steel member and connection design, and other details required for steel framed structures, for commercial, industrial, and other structure types.
  • Assists with structural quality inspections in the production plant and job sites on an "as-required" basis.
  • Communicates and coordinates with sub-trades, including the electrical and mechanical disciplines, and with internal project management, purchasing, and manufacturing departments, to facilitate accurate estimates and detailed production drawings to ensure they incorporate structural design requirements.
  • Assists in the maintenance and development of standard structural practices for design and manufacturing of structures.
  • Mentors the work of junior and less experienced engineers.
  • Complies with standards and procedures of PTW's health and safety manual and all Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or Engineer-In-Training (EIT) in good standing with APEGA (additional registration with APEGS, and/or EGBC an asset)
  • Minimum of 5years' experience in Canadian industrial and commercial structural steel design
  • Strong background in all applicable National and provincial building codes, and industry standards.
  • Experience using structural engineering software such as Advanced Design, S-Frame or STAAD Pro is an asset.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Highly professional and effective verbal communication skills and strong ability to express ideas clearly and enthusiastically.
  • Practical, "can-do" approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently or as a member of a team.
  • A commitment to ethical business practices and high personal integrity
