The Opportunity:

The Underwriting Counsel will provide legal and underwriting product support to the SVP, Chief Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, and the underwriting business operation. The Underwriting Counsel's support will be important in the development of new and existing commercial insurance products in addition to providing other legal and regulatory support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in the development of new and existing products by managing and conducting legal research to assess legal risks associated with different types of insurance policies. Ensures particular emphasis on risks related to coverage, policy exclusions and endorsements and provides recommendations to mitigate those risks.
  • Acts as a reference point with respect to the application and interpretation of policies as well as assists in drafting and approving complex policy wordings/ manuscripts, applications, customer communication and other policy related documentation.
  • Utilizes deep understanding of federal and provincial insurance laws and regulations to provide legal guidance and support to the underwriting operation as well as implement changes, as appropriate.
  • Collaborates closely with various stakeholders (internal clients/ business units), including underwriting and claims to advance Liberty Mutual Canada's business initiatives and ensures a risk-aware underwriting process. Provides legal guidance and support during the negotiation of policy terms and conditions.
  • Leads all aspects of monitoring, reviewing, and summarizing industry trends, emerging risks and market developments related to Liberty's business to inform underwriting decisions and risk assessments. Develops and delivers training sessions to underwriters to enhance understanding of legal risks, coverage, and best practices.
  • Leads the development of an internal manuscript governance framework and subject matter expert for global product development governance process.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • LL.B./J.D. and member in good standing with a Canadian Professional Law Society.
  • Bilingual (French-English) strongly preferred.
  • 4-7 years of experience as a lawyer/ legal advisor, preferably within the P&C Commercial insurance industry.
  • Knowledge of and experience with relevant legislation, regulation, and industry best practices
  • Experience in commercial policy coverage review, legal research, contract drafting, product development and compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a strong ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expert level capabilities in negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and to effectively prioritize work.
  • Demonstrated legal analysis and project management skills.
  • Must display effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and corporate and legal databases.
