We are looking for a Cook to join our Niigaaniin Kinoomaagewin Landbase Treatment Team providing nutritious, healthy traditional meals to both our community members attending treatment and the staff.

A. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Under the direction of the Land Based Treatment Manager/Lead the Niigaaniin Services Land Base Treatment Cook attends all land base treatment camps under Niigaaniin Services providing ongoing nutritional care to both community members partaking in the camp and employees supporting the camp. Niigaaniin's Kinoomaagewin Land Base Treatment is a 12-week treatment program on the land in Thessalon First Nation.

The Land Base Treatment Cook coordinates with the Land Base Treatment Manager/Lead to create and prepare nutritionally balanced meal plans and meals for community members and employees attending the land base detox and treatment camps. The Cook is responsible for picking up all required ingredients, keeping track of kitchen inventory, following all food safety protocols, and coordinating with internal and external supports ie. Program Managers and Nutritionist.

B. QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • It is preferred for the applicant to be a registered band member of the First Nations serviced by Niigaaniin Services, including Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, Mississauga First Nation, Serpent River First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, and Wahnapitae First
  • Culinary Diploma,
  • One (1) years of experience working culinary environment; experience working in a social services land-based environment would be an asset,
  • CPR level C & First Aid,
  • Will have a valid class “G” driver's license and a vehicle, and
  • Provide a clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Peoples Sector Check applicable to the responsibilities of this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Anishnaabemowin, culture and traditions of Indigenous people of the Robinson Huron Treaty,
  • Familiar with community services networks and knowledge the Niigaaniin Services would be an asset,
  • All candidates must be able to work with a diverse population,
  • Experience in using different cooking tools, equipment, and utensils,
  • Expert knowledge in various cooking methods and procedures,
  • Understanding of food preparation and meal planning,
  • Knowledge of food allergies/allergens and food related diseases, and the ingredients that may cause the allergy/disease,
  • Knowledge of health and safety regarding food handling, packaging, and cross contamination etc,
  • Able to withstand long hours of standing, bending, and moving around,
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics to make correct measurements of ingredients,
  • Ability to follow recipe instructions,
  • Ability to safely uses cooking tools; knifes, cookware, bakeware,
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment,
  • Must be Proficient in MS Office Applications, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and internet,
  • Requires minimum supervision, able to work independently and maintains a supportive and cooperative environment with colleagues and the communities, and
  • Ability to work with internal and external partners; program managers, nutritionist etc.
