We are looking for a Cultural and Traditional Knowledge Keeper to join our Niigaaniin Kinoomaagewin Landbase Treatment Team providing cultural supports to both our community members attending treatment and the staff.

A. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Under the direction of the Land Based Treatment Manager/Lead the Niigaaniin Services Land Base Treatment Cultural and Traditional Person attends Niigaaniin Services land base detox and treatment camps.

The Cultural and Traditional Person would lead ceremony during treatment camps as well as provides cultural support community members and employees (if required) during the duration of the land base camps. The Cultural and Traditional Person is responsible for leading land base teachings and facilitations in coordination with the Manager/Lead and other clinical supports. This position supports from a cultural perspective in the teams, clinical supports and provides ongoing care to community members through a wholistic, cultural and Anishnawbe approach as the community members go through their individual journeys of detoxification or treatment on the land.

This position utilizes cultural appropriate supports and can implement a two-eyed seeing approach related to recovery programming and service delivery weaving mainstream approaches with traditional Indigenous ways of knowing.

B. QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • It is preferred for the applicant to be a registered band member of the First Nations serviced by Niigaaniin Services, including Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, Mississauga First Nation, Serpent River First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, and Wahnapitae First Nation.
  • Follows Anishbawbe teachings, and practice a belief system related to Anishbawbe ways,
  • Understanding of Anishnaabemowin, culture and traditions of Indigenous people of the Robinson Huron Treaty,
  • Ceremony Maker and able to lead traditional structures for ceremonies and teachings while providing direction and support to cultural helpers,
  • College Diploma in Addictions Counselling and/or Social Work with a minimum of 3 years' work experience in the addictions field is an asset,
  • CPR level C & First Aid,
  • Must have a clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Peoples Sector Check applicable to the responsibilities of this position.
  • Class G Driver's license and access to a vehicle is required for transportation to and from camp sites.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge, skills and abilities to support and maintain the treatment site and respecting mother earth during the land use process from an indigenous lends,
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to lead medicine picking would be considered an asset,
  • Knowledge skill and ability regarding medicine preparation and when to use within the appropriate seasons,
  • Knowledge skill and ability to hunt, fish, trap, harvest etc. and share/teach these activities with community members on the land,
  • Knowledge skill and ability to do traditional crafts; Quill, Shakers, Ash Baskets, Tanning Hide, etc., and share/ teach these sills with community members on the land;
  • Knowledge and ability to share traditional teachings and storytelling,
  • Familiar with community services networks and knowledge the Niigaaniin Services would be an asset,
  • Ability to work in a performance-based system with a proven track record of meeting targets and outcomes is essential,
  • Requires minimum supervision, able to work independently and maintains a supportive and cooperative environment with colleagues and the communities,
  • All candidates must be able to work with a diverse population,
  • Ability to bend, pull, push, and lift up to 50 lbs,
  • Demonstrated ability to implement clinical care in accordance with outlined policies and procedures of the land-based detox and treatment camp,
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment while working in a stressful environment,
  • Excellent teamwork skill to collaborate with other emergency services professionals,
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills to navigate challenging situation with community members, staff and other emergency services professionals,
  • Mental toughness to handle difficult situations,
  • Ability to think quickly and critically, especially when deciding the next course of treatment for community members,
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and make life-saving decisions in critical situations with community members attending detox and treatment camps,
  • Excellent observation skills and strong attention to detail when working amongst community members.
