Position Overview

Reporting to the Kitchen and Assistant Kitchen Manager, the Kitchen Supervisor will be responsible for assisting in leading and supervising the kitchen team (First Cooks, Second Cooks, Prep Cooks, Servers & Dishwashers) and ensuring high quality standards in food production, taste, presentation, and safety. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, delivering exceptional customer service.

Larga Baffin is a fast paced and stressful environment as we accommodate a high volume of clients requiring medical care not provided in their home communities. The ideal candidate must be able to operate in a dynamic and ever-changing environment.


Key Responsibilities

Meal Preparation

  • Assists in the execution of menus for all meals provided by Larga Baffin
  • Prepares high quality food.
  • Works different stations in the Kitchen to ensure proper procedures are taking place.
  • Trains staff by showing correct methods of preparation and cleanliness.
  • Assists clients with special food requests.
  • Provides input on menu options that are healthy and nutritious for clients and staff.
  • Understands and communicates food restrictions (when necessary)

Kitchen Operations

  • Assists the Kitchen Managers with ordering supplies and managing inventory.
  • Communicates with all departments and outside service providers to ensure client's needs are met.
  • Continuously monitors ways to improve or enhance the client's quality of care.
  • Takes initiative and corrective measure to ensure all necessary meal preparation and meal service tasks are completed.
  • Ensures kitchen staff are following procedures and policies for kitchen cleanliness, sanitation, safe food handling, safe equipment use and general health and safety; provides input to the Assistant Kitchen Manager for improving these procedures and policies.

Culture & Team Supervision

  • Supervises meal preparation and meal service activities to ensure food and service quality.
  • This includes monitoring temp logs, ensuring daily lists are being completed and takeout meal quality is treated equally as important as the food we serve in the dining room.
  • Trains and supervises kitchen staff to ensure food quality and service standards are met.
  • Ensures staff are compliant with Larga Baffin's Health and Safety standards and all policies.
  • Provides support to the Kitchen Managers in developing and maintaining department training and/or procedures manuals.


Education & Experience Requirements

  • Previous experience working in an Inuit organization and/or serving traditional country food is an asset.
  • 5-7 years of culinary experience with at least 1-2 years of experience supervising a team
  • Previous kitchen experience in a hospital or industrial type (buffet style cooking) setting which includes customer service.
  • Post-secondary education in culinary arts, hospitality, or related field.
  • Safe Food Handling Certification.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Inuit culture and values is considered an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of safe food handling, sanitation procedures and food preparation and service.
  • Knowledge of food and beverage industry principles, methods, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledgeable about weights, measurements, hygiene, equipment handling, sanitation, and workplace safety.
  • Demonstrates a strong orientation for customer service; shows patience and maturity to interact with clients, visitors, and staff tactfully and diplomatically.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret the needs of clients and offer the appropriate options and solutions necessary.
  • Ability to prepare meals for special dietary needs and understands nutritional restrictions and portion sizes to be served.
  • Ability to cook meats, poultry and seafood as well as prepare foods (stock, soups, sauces, etc.) from scratch.
  • Standing for an extensive period.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and different shifts.
  • Strong organizational/decision making skills and an aptitude for problem solving.
  • Strong knowledge of operating and maintaining equipment in a commercial kitchen
  • Ability to supervise employees, including organizing, prioritizing, scheduling work assignments and demonstrated ability to motivate and lead a team.
  • Strong training, coaching, and mentoring skills are essential.
  • Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
  • Able to build and maintain strong relationships with other members of the kitchen staff, external providers, and clients.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Places a strong emphasis on “doing things right”.
  • Beneficiary status with the ability to speak Inuktitut would be considered an asset.
