We are looking for a Lead Cousellor and Facilitator to join our Niigaaniin Kinoomaagewin Landbase Treatment Team providing support to our Counsellor and Facilitators as well as our community members attending treatment.

A. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Under the direction of the Land Base Treatment Manager and the Director of Niigaaniin Services, the Land Based Treatment Lead will work to deliver programming and support the land-based treatment staff to provide a 12-week treatment program on the land in Thessalon First Nation. The program will be delivered through predetermined curriculum designed to support the processing and treatment of trauma, addiction, and the intergenerational impacts of colonization. The Program Lead will work in collaboration with other Niigaaniin programs and services to support community members from the 7 First Nations and those identified Urban Indigenous community members residing outside of reserve communities.

The Lead will oversee the intake process, program delivery, staff direction/delegation, community collaboration, and day to day programming expectations and standard setting. Niigaaniin strives to deliver programming/curriculum based on identified community needs; program evaluations are a crucial part of the role and continued program adaptations, and evolution is required. A pre-determined curriculum has been developed keeping in line with Anishnaabe Teachings and knowledge while drawing from mainstream best practice addiction and recovery models with a focus on emotional focused therapy modalities.

B. QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • It is preferred for the applicant to be a registered band member of the First Nations serviced by Niigaaniin Services, including Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, Mississauga First Nation, Serpent River First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, and Wahnapitae First Nation,
  • University Degree in Social Work or related human services field, Graduate (Masters) degree would be considered an asset,
  • 5+ years experience counselling individuals and facilitating groups, and case management for diverse clients facing multiple barriers that include addictions, mental health illnesses/challenges, criminal justice system involvement, chronic homelessness, child welfare involvement, history of trauma, grief, and loss and/or impacts of intergenerational trauma,
  • 2-5 years experience as a lead/supervisory role in a social work setting preferably treatment setting or land-based program,
  • Experience, training, education is counselling and therapy strategies such as emotion focused therapies, somatic experiencing, or other modalities used to support healing and recovery from trauma, addictions, and intergenerational impacts of colonization,
  • Strong understanding of two-eyed seeing related to recovery program and service delivery weaving mainstream approaches with traditional Indigenous ways of knowing,
  • CPR level C & First Aid,
  • Will have a valid class “G” driver's license and a vehicle, and
  • Provide a clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Peoples Sector Check applicable to the responsibilities of this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Anishnaabemowin, culture and traditions of Indigenous people of the Robinson Huron Waawiindaamaagewin,
  • Will be knowledgeable about culture and the significant characteristics of the social structures and relevant human service needs of the Anishnawbek,
  • All candidates must be able to work with a diverse population,
  • Adaptability of program materials is crucial to meet the unique and varying needs of participants,
  • Familiar with addiction and mental health services and resources along the North Shore including NSTC services and programs, First Nation community resources, residential treatment centres and programs throughout the province,
  • Exceptional knowledge and use of social work theories and approaches that could assist community members to move forward towards recovery while building independence, self-esteem, and a connection to identity,
  • Ability to balance target outcomes with quality client care ensuring client centred relationships are established and sustained to meet the community member where they are at,
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial policies and legislation, regulations and/or guidelines that are relevant to the funding and delivery of Niigaaniin services,
  • Will be knowledgeable of the range of both contemporary and traditional methods of intervention, assessment, counselling, support, training, and healing that are effective in promoting community, family and individual development and well-being,
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, Zoom, Teams and familiarity with case management and case noting systems,
  • Proven leadership, delegation and supervisory skills required
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills,
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written),
  • Excellent stress management and coping skills that support self-care and healthy boundary setting with community members, community partners and teammates,
  • Efficient time management skills with adherence to timelines and deadline, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment,
  • Ability to learn new skills and be flexible to adapt to changing workload,
  • Ability to maintain a supportive and cooperative environment with colleagues and the communities,
  • Ability to build strong bonds with community, partner agencies and other recovery and treatment programs along the North Shore
  • Ability and Knowledge around recording, and collecting statistical data regarding service delivery, meeting funder requirements to submit statistics on predetermined intervals.
