A. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Under the direction of the Land Based Treatment Manager/Lead the Niigaaniin Services Land Based Treatment Counsellor and Facilitator will work to deliver programming and support the land-based treatment participants to complete a 12-week treatment program on the land in Thessalon First Nation. The program will be delivered through predetermined curriculum designed to support the processing and treatment of trauma, addiction, and the intergenerational impacts of colonization. The counsellor/facilitator will work in collaboration with other land-based staff and Niigaaniin programs and services to support community members from the 7 First Nations and those identified Urban Indigenous community members residing outside of reserve communities.

The counsellor/facilitator will support program delivery through one-to-one supports, group facilitation, ceremony participation, collaboration with other Niigaaniin services, and support the adherence of day-to-day programming expectations. Pre-determined curriculum has been developed keeping in line with Anishnaabe Teachings and knowledge while drawing from mainstream best practices in addiction and recovery models with a focus on emotional focused therapy modalities.

B. QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • It is preferred for the applicant to be a registered band member of the First Nations serviced by Niigaaniin Services, including Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, Mississauga First Nation, Serpent River First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, and Wahnapitae First Nation,
  • University Degree in Social Work or related human services field is preferred a College Diploma inAddictions Counselling and/or Social Service Work.· Minimum of 3 - 5 years' work experience in the addictions and mental health field and/or appropriate training certifications related to trauma and/or addictions would be considered an asset,
  • Experience with counselling and facilitating psychoeducational groups for a diverse clientele is required,
  • Experience, training, education in counselling and therapy strategies such as emotion focused therapies, somatic experiencing, or other modalities used to support healing and recovery from trauma, addictions, and intergenerational impacts of colonization,
  • Strong understanding of two-eyed seeing related to recovery programming and service delivery weaving mainstream approaches with traditional Indigenous ways of knowing,
  • CPR level C & First Aid,
  • Must have a clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Peoples Sector Check applicable to the responsibilities of this position,
  • Will have a valid G driver's license and access to a vehicle is required for transportation to and from work location
  • Be comfortable working on the land in all weather conditions, duties on the land will be incorporated to the therapeutic process of treatment and could include various tasks not limited to: firewood, animal/livestock care, ceremony, harvesting, gathering, hunting, etc.,
  • Knowledge of Aanishnaabemowin or willingness to learn and speak during workday is essential.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Anishnaabemowin, culture and traditions of Indigenous people of the Robinson Huron Waawiindaamaagewin,
  • Will be knowledgeable about culture and the significant characteristics of the social structures and relevant human service needs of the Anishnawbek,
  • All candidates must be able to work with a diverse population,
  • Adaptability of program materials is crucial to meet the unique and varying needs of participants,
  • Knowledge of completing various assessments and screenings to determine community member's readiness, mental health and addictions risk,
  • Familiar with addiction and mental health services and resources along the North Shore including NSTC services and programs, First Nation community resources, residential treatment centres and programs throughout the province,
  • Exceptional knowledge and use of social work theories and approaches that could assist community members to move forward towards recovery while building independence, self-esteem, and a connection to identity,
  • Ability to balance target outcomes with quality client care ensuring client centred relationships are established and sustained to meet the community member where they are at,
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial policies and legislation, regulations and/or guidelines that are relevant to the funding and delivery of Niigaaniin services,
  • Will be knowledgeable of the range of both contemporary and traditional methods of intervention, assessment, counselling, support, training, and healing that are effective in promoting community, family and individual development and well-being,
  • Demonstrated ability to implement clinical care in accordance with outlined policies and procedures of the land-based treatment camp,
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, Zoom, Teams and familiarity with case management and case noting systems,
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment,
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment while working in a stressful environment,
  • Excellent teamwork skills to collaborate with colleagues, agency partners and other external supports,
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills to navigate challenging situations with community members, fellow staff, and other professionals,
  • Mental toughness to handle difficult situations,
  • Ability to think quickly and critically, especially when deciding the next course of treatment for community members,
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and make sound decisions, and
  • Excellent observation skills and strong attention to detail.
