Water First partners with Indigenous communities to solve local drinking water and environmental water challenges through education, training, and meaningful collaboration.

We seek an Indigenous Schools Outreach Instructor to report to the Sr. Manager, School Water.

This is an on-call, part-time contract from March 2024 to July 31, 2025. The hours will vary depending on the amount of community outreach opportunities that are available.

Wage: $30 per hour

The Indigenous Schools Outreach Instructor is responsible for the coordination and delivery of Water Science education programming. Our Indigenous School Water programs focus on empowering Indigenous students and creating a passion for water science through hands-on workshops, outdoor education, and project-based learning. Program development and delivery are done in collaboration with community partners to ensure relevant local learning objectives are met. This position will support the growth and expansion of our School Water department.

Responsibilities for this position include:

Program Coordination

  • Outreach/coordination with various educators and community partners to collaborate on future week-long water science programs in regard to the organization's outreach strategy
  • Outreach/Coordinate with educators, community partners and relevant outside groups to collaborate on multi-week high-school summer credit programs in regard to the organization's outreach strategy
  • Utilize customer service software to track communications with community partners

Program Delivery

  • Delivery of in-person week-long water science education programs in Indigenous communities throughout Canada as often as is required to meet the mutually agreed-upon ambitions of the department
  • Delivery of a multi-week hands-on high school summer credit program with community partners to the specifications of relevant school boards and/or local authoritative education bodies

Departmental Development

  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager of School Water and the other Water First team members, review and make recommendations for continual improvement opportunities within the department and greater organization
  • Represent and assist Water First in public and community relations, presentations and other public speaking engagements as needed
  • Work with the Water First Communications team to promote work completed
  • Inventory maintenance and upkeep

  • A self-starter, problem-solver, extremely organized, analytical, flexible, and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work respectfully and collaboratively in a dynamic, multi-faceted team environment and work independently
  • You have demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, both orally and in writing
  • A willingness to continually expand your professional skill set, learn on the job, take on additional responsibilities as required and respond to and thrive in a dynamic work environment
  • Extensive knowledge of administrative and presentation software, including Zoom, Google Meet, and Google Suite
  • Project management skills
  • Basic accounting skills
  • Access when necessary to a vehicle
  • A Class G driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Willingness to travel to Indigenous communities throughout Canada on an as needed basis for periods averaging a week long, including travelling during the weekends
  • Candidates must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada under relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

The following are considered assets:

  • Bachelor of Education and Ontario College of Teacher's certificate or have equivalent
  • Teaching or field-based experience in some or all the following areas:
    • Outdoor education
    • Classroom education
    • Science lab setting
  • Experience related to Environmental Studies, Outdoor education, Engineering, Geography, Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Culture, and or Science is a vital asset
  • Experience working in collaboration with Indigenous community members
  • Experience working in developing or using educational science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related hands-on tools
  • You are artistic and have digital arts, digital printing, and digital mapping skills
  • Bilingual French and English
  • Indigenous languages, as required
