POSITION TITLE: Psychologist

STATUS: Full/Part-time temporary (3-5 days per week)

LOCATION: 24 Selkirk Street, Ottawa, ON

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

The Akausivik Inuit Family Health Team (AIFHT) is passionate about providing culturally competent, high-quality care and support, intended to enhance the wellbeing of Inuit. We work with federal, provincial, and local health authorities to ensure we are providing a responsive and culturally appropriate model of excellence in primary care.

ABOUT THE JOB:

As a member of the Akausivik Inuit Family Health Team (AIFHT), the Psychologist will work conjointly with the team of Executive Director, Consulting Physician, Physicians, Registered Nurses, Case Managers/Interpreters, Medical Secretaries, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and others to provide psychological and counselling services to individuals and families, specifically related to trauma, addictions, mental health and other areas of need. The position also participates in developing and delivering programs for small groups offering education, instruction, and support. The Psychologist works closely with patients and families as well with team members and service providers in helping families meet their needs, overcome their challenges, heal, and reach their goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To assist in motivation of patients for initiating and maintaining change in lifestyle
  • To assess any psychological barriers to change and assist in overcoming these
  • To conduct behaviour change group sessions for patients.
  • To consult with staff on use of behaviour change strategies
  • To educate the inter-professional group with regards to these processes
  • Liaison with physicians and other team members as required
  • Liaise with other care providers in the health care system and community as required
  • Teaching: Inter-professional team members

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a Master's in Psychotherapy/Psychology, Master's in Social Work, or other related degree.
  • Psychology (Psychologist)Registered or eligible for registration as a Psychologist with the college of Psychologists of Ontario
  • 3 years of directly related experience.
  • Experience supporting individuals, families, and children with issues related to trauma, addictions and mental health
  • Knowledge of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), and other related training, evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches or modalities would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and interest in Inuit health issues and culture.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment tools and treatments plans.
  • Excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in an inter-professional team environment and be a contributing member.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time effectively and be flexible in a very active work environment.
  • Experience maintaining patient records and participating in case reviews.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Able to work in person, onsite to see patients.
  • Must be accessible by phone.
  • May be required to work evening and weekend shifts as necessary.

Reporting Structure

  • The position reports to the AIFHT Executive Director. Professional guidance and support will be provided by the Consulting Physician and patient file review by an AIFHT Psychologist.
