In-Depth Counsellor

Huronia Transition Homes is a multi-site, multi-program organization operating throughout Simcoe County, providing shelter, support, education and advocacy to women and their children who have experienced abuse. We work to end all violence against all women. We are committed to providing equitable services based in intersectional feminism and harm reduction philosophies.

We are currently seeking a skilled full-time Crisis Counsellor who is passionate about ending violence to join our team. The position is based out of our Athena's Sexual Assault Centre location located in Barrie. As a Counsellor you will provide services to women who have experienced sexual abuse and/or intimate partner violence, including one-on-one counselling, group counselling and answering the crisis line.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide individual, supportive counselling to strengthen women's understanding of the impacts of violence against women and or sexual abuse/sexual assault and to contextualize and normalize their experiences.
  • Establish a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment to facilitate women's empowerment and ability to make change.
  • Assist women in developing personal goals and action plans.
  • Provide advocacy and support on behalf of women with collateral agencies and within systems, as requested by women.
  • Provide referrals and assist women in making connections with community resources including housing, medical, and justice systems.
  • Facilitate groups as requested and scheduled.
  • Provide information to women regarding services available through the Counselling program.

Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree/diploma within a counselling discipline (BSW/MSW preferred) with a minimum of 3-5 years counselling/group facilitation experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the issues and complexities of the impact of violence against women particularly intimate partner violence, and/or sexual abuse, with a strong feminist analysis.
  • Knowledge of, and commitment to, working within an intersectional feminist and harm reduction framework.
  • An understanding of, and an ability to work with, diverse women including women from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of social services, housing, medical, and justice systems and familiarity with procedures for access.
  • Tact, sound judgment, and multi-tasking ability.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel within Simcoe County, valid driver's license, and reliable vehicle.
