Terminal Operators with Cando Rail & Terminals, at the transloading facility in Dartmouth, NS are responsible to perform tasks that support the operations in a safe and environmentally sensitive customer service driven environment. This position is responsible for carrying out the activities that support transload operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance for the facility. Incumbents must work well in teams in challenging conditions to maximize safety, reliability, and cost-effective delivery of service to the customer.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair site facilities in a safe, efficient, cost effective and environmentally sound manner
  • Prepare rail tank cars for offloading, ensure rail cars are properly secured and connected for the transloading of dangerous goods
  • Upon completion of offload, ensure rail tank cars are empty and are properly secured and the transload tracks are prepared for outbound shipment
  • Troubleshoot a broad spectrum of technical issues - operational alarms, shutdowns, and disruptions as they arise and initiate steps to resolution
  • Ensure periodic preventative maintenance activities are completed on a mechanical, electrical and instrumentation equipment
  • Complete daily paperwork, inspections, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary, along with receiving and shipping paperwork
  • General site maintenance, cleaning, housekeeping, and snow removal when required
  • Communicate daily with CN operating crews

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Excellent teamwork skills Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings, policy, and procedure manuals, and switching lists
  • Physically fit including the ability to move load arms and position valves on a continuous basis, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches, able to work in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge of technology and computer systems with a willingness to use Excel and Outlook on a daily basis
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to obtain certification and medical clearances including clear drug & alcohol testing
  • Ability to meet and maintain all safety and customer requirements
  • Willing and able to work in a labour-intensive position in all weather conditions for 12-hour shifts
  • Proficient in a Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook with the skill to adapt easily to other software systems
  • All employees are responsible to work in teams and perform any of the duties identified for transloading once trained and qualified in the position. Other responsibilities include:
  • Promptly reporting of all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Site Supervisor
  • Completing daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary Exerting "best effort" to protect human life, human safety and company property
  • Actively participating with the team and providing excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
  • Participating in training or company initiatives as required

Education & Experience

  • Valid driver's license is required
  • Training in handling dangerous goods and working with petroleum products is an asset
