Summary

The Technical Services Engineer will provide technical support to various operation and engineering departments at Aquatera. The Technical Services department supports Aquatera's operations and capital project groups. The team is tasked with completing preliminary and feasibility studies, problem solving of a technical nature, risk analyses, reviewing engineering drawings, updating standards, drawings and technical specifications, and generally providing technical support to the various Aquatera operation, safety and engineering groups.

The successful individual must have a combination of strong technical engineering skills and management experience. The Technical Services Engineer must be able to familiarize themselves with and understand the operations, technical specifications, best practices, and other engineering details of Aquatera operations. The individual must oversee and review technical designs and have the ability to professionally seal designs, upgrades, and specifications. This individual is a key member of the Engineering department and ensures that Aquatera Utilities Inc. provides high quality, environmentally sound services that are second to none. Other duties will be assigned as necessary.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Applying Aquatera Safety policies, standards, and values to their work and that of their team;
  • Working on a pre-feasibility, feasibility, and preliminary engineering studies for potential capital projects with limited oversight from management;
  • Presenting the findings of studies or justifications for potential projects to senior managers and executives;
  • Technical review of drawings, studies and specifications for Aquatera and municipal shareholder projects;
  • Creating and updating existing design standards for water, wastewater, and distribution infrastructure;
  • Assisting other engineering staff with projects, and providing engineering advice for the operation teams on difficult and complex problems;
  • Designing engineered solutions for small upgrades or maintenance improvements, including the use of AutoCAD or other design software;
  • Providing engineering advice or direction to both other employees as well as outside contacts;
  • Coordination with regulatory agencies and the public when required;
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Required qualifications include:

The successful candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have:

  • Five years of relevant engineering experience;
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Process Control, or Chemical)
  • Registered, or is eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or as a Professional Licencee, the Association of Science & Engineering Technology (ASET) Professionals of Alberta;
  • Have the ability to read engineering drawings;
  • Be able to familiarize oneself with the technical nature of Aquatera's operations along with key governing standards and approvals;
  • Have the ability to use judgement to identify the most appropriate solution from several options;
  • Possess the conviction to improve personally/professionally and support continuous improvement in the department and company as a whole;
  • Possess a high Level of personal integrity;
  • Be able to provide leadership and counsel to direct reports;
  • Have a strong work ethic;
  • Be a self-starter with effective time management skills;
  • Committed to self-driven personal and professional growth;
  • Be able to work with little supervision and must be self-motivated;
  • Have the ability to conduct presentations, including but not limited to technical presentations and project review meetings;
  • Possess strong working knowledge of Outlook, Word, City Works, Excel, GPS, AutoCAD and MS Project;
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated diplomacy and professionalism;
  • Possess strong technical report writing skills;
  • Have demonstrated organizational and management skills;
  • Have a valid Alberta Driver's License (Class V).

Working Conditions

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computers and peripherals;
  • Physical dexterity required to operate water valves, lift manhole covers and conduct field surveys and inspections;
  • 40-hour work week with overtime and or weekend work as required;
  • May be exposed to hazards associated with the services we provide;
  • Site visits where PPE is required;
  • Long periods of standing may be required during site inspections;
  • Some travel may be required.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Provide a valid Canadian Driver's license (minimum Class V (non GDL)
  • Provide a driver's abstract satisfactory to the Employer
  • Pass a comprehensive drug and alcohol test
