Marketing Assistant

Are you looking for a summer position where you can make a significant impact in the local community? Food Banks Mississauga's vision is a Mississauga where everyone is food secure. Our mission is to lead our agency network to realize a food-secure Mississauga by providing and promoting access to healthy and appropriate food.

We are looking for two separate summer placements for the Marketing Assistant role.

Objectives

  • Put your theoretical knowledge in marketing, journalism, photography, fundraising, or public relations into action in a busy non-profit. Use the opportunity to work with and learn from experienced non-profit professionals.
  • Procure videos, photos, and interviews to support the next year of marketing and fundraising efforts. Create engaging videos to be shared across all social media pages and assist with blog posts and other digital content.

Responsibilities

Conduct Interviews and Capture Footage

  • Source client, volunteer, and supporter stories to use in organizational marketing and fundraising materials by conducting interviews at Food Banks Mississauga, our agency partners, and over the phone.
  • Capture and edit individual portraits and video footage of interview subjects and b-roll to accompany client, volunteer, and supporter stories in digital and print marketing and/or fundraising materials and on social media.
  • Approach each interview with empathy and sensitivity and practice active listening.
  • Transcribe interview recordings and ensure all files are appropriately edited, sorted, and logged on Google Drive.
  • Track the use of images, videos and stories used in promotional and campaign materials and manage overall stories and waivers library.

Create Digital Content

  • Write and schedule engaging content for social pages, including Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn.
  • Ideate, create, and post engaging videos for TikTok and Instagram (which may be repurposed for Facebook, X, and LinkedIn). Get ready to step in front of the camera as well!
  • Plan and track all content in a social media editorial calendar.
  • Write longer-form content to be shared as blog posts on website.

Other Marketing Tasks

  • Assist in the writing, editing, design, and production of marketing materials (digital and otherwise) such as email newsletters, webpages, impact reports, posters and other marketing materials.
  • Support other staff and activities of Food Banks Mississauga, as required.
  • Additional projects as aligned with Food Banks Mississauga's operating plan for the year.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Education and experience at a non-profit, marketing, public relations, communications, journalism, or similar environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (with comfortability being on video).
  • Excellent interview skills (active listening, asking questions to further conversation, approach with empathy and sensitivity).
  • Ability to pay attention to detail, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Experience creating videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube, etc., leveraging the latest trends.
  • Knowledge of Hootsuite and/or other social management platforms.
  • Experience with photography and videography.
  • Passionate and energized about social justice, community involvement, or similar causes.
  • Flexible team player with versatile skills - you're highly motivated, self-directed, a problem-solver, and enjoy variety in your work.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality at all times.
  • Strong MS Office or G Suite skills (all programs) - we are a cloud-based paperless environment.
  • Graphic design experience and knowledge of Adobe Suite (In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro etc.) is an asset.

Mandatory Qualifications

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations

Reports to: Marketing Coordinator

Position Type: 35 hours/week, hourly

Working Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am - 5 pm Wednesday from 9 am - 8 pm

Compensation: $25.05/hour
