The Opportunity

The Language Instructor provides English language training to adult learners who are assessed based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) framework.

Responsibilities:

  • Instruct newcomer adult learners in LINC themes and topics, face-to-face and/or online, using lessons provided by the regular classroom teacher and/or assist with lesson planning;
  • Enhance the curriculum with level-appropriate experiential activities;
  • Become familiar with Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) to chart learners' progress;
  • Work with LINC instructors to participate in group learning activity projects according to learners' interests, abilities and needs;
  • Deliver computer-based learning activities in line with the Canadian Language Benchmarks;
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance records;
  • Inform Supervisor or Team Lead of issues in a timely manner;
  • Help maintain a clean classroom in accordance with SAM Standards;
  • Carry out additional duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • CLB Bootcamp certificate would be considered an asset (CLB Bootcamp – Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks);
  • A Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution
  • A recognized TESL credential (a full list of recognized institutions can be found on the TESL Canada website (https://www.tesl.ca/training/tesl-canada-recognized-teacher-training-programs/recognized-teacher-training-directory)
  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of newcomer adult learners
  • A minimum of 2 years work experience in a cross-cultural environment
  • Must be fluent in the English language, knowledge of other languages is an asset
  • Exceptional oral and written English skills
  • Computer competency in Microsoft programs
