POSITION SUMMARY

The Traditional Plasterer specializes in applying, maintaining and/or restoring traditional lime plaster or similar materials, on interior and exterior walls with wire lath, wood lath and gypsum board substrates, ceilings and building partitions of heritage buildings to produce plain or decorative surfaces using heritage materials and techniques at the customer sites. The Traditional Plasterer has expert knowledge of lime plaster, slaked lime, hydraulic lime and gypsum plasters (heritage) materials and solid knowledge of heritage plastering techniques. The work location of this position is in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

KEY RESPONSIBLITIES & DUTIES

  1. Read blueprints/instructions and examine surfaces to determine the heritage methods to be used and amount of work necessary.
  2. Plaster & render with lime-based plasters.
  3. Maintain & repair existing renders.
  4. Repair original ceiling and wall plaster in-situ using appropriate materials.
  5. Patch repairs to original ceiling and wall plaster.
  6. Analyze the original plaster.
  7. Perform replacement & refurbishment work using traditional materials and techniques.
  8. Provide assistance to other areas of restoration work.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High school diploma and successful completion of an apprenticeship.

Other Experience or Training:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Plasterer.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience plastering heritage building interiors.

Technical Skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of plaster material and how to select, mix and apply them.
  • Complete knowledge of heritage plaster materials and techniques.

Other Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a traditional plasterer
  • A relevant trade qualification or extensive “on the job” experience
  • Experience working with lime products.
  • Experience working with Lathe and plaster structures.
  • Experience working with plaster moulding.
  • Previous experience in the Heritage sector is an advantage.
  • A proven track record.
  • The ability to follow instructions and to work on his/her own initiative or as part of a team.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Able to manage workload and have work completed on time.
  • Excellent awareness of site health and safety
  • Relative trade card preferable.
  • Aptitude in using appropriate tools (hawk and trowel, Darby, floats, joint rules, mixing machines, running moulds, silicone mixing equipment).
  • Knowledge of job site safety rules and regulations (Occupational Health and Safety).
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, highly organized.
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Available for overtime, when required.
  • Must be clean-shaven to be able to wear a fitted respirator up to eight hours per day.
  • Adaptable to last-minute schedule changes.
  • Willingness to complete tasks under tight deadlines
  • Able to obtain PWGSC security clearance, including fingerprinting and a criminal record check (mandatory), i.e., has not been convicted of a crime for which a pardon has not been granted.
