Sagkeeng Child and Family Services (SCFS) is a First Nations CFS Agency who strives to recruit inspired, accountable, and driven individuals to join our diverse talented team of professionals. We are currently recruiting for two (2) permanent fulltime Oshkaabewis – Land Based Mentor for our Agency.

Job Summary and Qualifications

Areas of specialty:

The Oshkaabewis works with children, youth, families, and caregivers of the Agency in delivering land based traditional cultural teachings through individual or group settings. Must be willing to collaborate with team members to conduct/or assist with ceremonies and other cultural activities based on the needs of the individual and family

Qualifications:

  • Must practice cultural humility and have knowledge and understanding working with Indigenous populations.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of Sagkeeng's customs and traditions.
  • Must have proficient knowledge regarding the comprehensive issues relating to colonization, intergenerational trauma, and residential school trauma.
  • Strong knowledge of community resources and ability to maintain professional relationships with families, colleagues, and collaterals.
  • Able to work with children, adult individuals, couples, and families.
  • Proven experience teaching and leading land-based activities; traditional ecological knowledge to develop land-based healing activities.
  • Knowledge in the teachings from the land and Elders.
  • Knowledge of a child & family service setting is an asset.
  • Empathetic communication and engagement skills.
  • Proven experience with documentation and writing.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Flexible work schedule (able to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays)
  • The ability to speak and/or understand the Ojibway language is considered an asset.
  • Valid class five (5) driver's license and fully insured reliable vehicle with $2,000,000.00 liability insurance.
  • Clear criminal records, child abuse and prior contact check.

Duties & Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Works as a team member of the Agency's Biidaaziiway Gamik Mental Wellness Unit.
  • Works with children and youth to achieve their personal and cultural goals.
  • Participate in meetings as required; promotes positive teamwork and exhibits a high degree of positive role modelling for clients of the Agency.
  • In consultation with the Cultural Program Supervisor, Elders and Family, helps to perform and deliver the rites of passage opportunities.
  • Provides detailed reports on cultural activities, record keeping and report writing as required; this is to include monthly summaries of activities and progress in the clients cultural planning.
  • Makes necessary arrangements for the gathering of medicines or other excursions.
  • Works with the Cultural Program Supervisor to develop a Cultural Plan that connects the children/youth to their home community and surrounding area.
  • Assists in various ceremonies, cultural activities, Traditional teachings and coordinates the work required in preparation at SCFS.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualified candidates will be required to undergo a criminal record check, child abuse registry check, and a prior contact check as a condition of employment. Sagkeeng Community members and Indigenous candidates will be given preference and are encouraged to self-identify as being of Indigenous descent.
