Conductors with Central Manitoba Railway are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching and movement services throughout southeastern Manitoba. Working in a fast-paced, customer oriented environment, the Conductor must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills.

Roles and Responsibilities

The incumbent works in a team environment to provide safe and effective switching and movement services. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Building trains according to instructions and requirements
  • Ensuring safe operation of train movements
  • Applying CROR rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a conductor including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars, managing air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes
  • Providing protection of train, track, and equipment
  • Performing equipment inspections and air brake tests
  • Complying with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, customer, and CEMR; practicing and promoting safe work habits
  • Keeping the interior of the locomotive safe, clean, and tidy
  • Completing daily inspection and testing of the locomotive brakes and safety devices
  • Promptly reporting of all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Operations Supervisor
  • Completing daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
  • Exerting "best effort" to protect human life, human safety and company property
  • Actively participating with the team and providing excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
  • Participating in training or company initiatives as required

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Excellent teamwork; strong customer service skills
  • Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings, policy and procedure manuals, and switching lists
  • Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions for up to twelve (12) continuous hours
  • Knowledge with technology and computer systems
  • Strong problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Meet all customer site requirements
  • Ability to hold and maintain safety critical medical status including clear drug and alcohol testing

Education and Experience

  • Must possess and/or be able to hold and maintain CROR certification
  • Previous railway experience is required, previous rail education training will be considered
