Role Description

The Construction Estimator is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of full-cost estimates for a variety of projects by studying plans and specifications; collaborating with the Project Manager, the Project Coordinator, and other members of the construction crew to test for project feasibility and analyze building projects from multiple angles. The Estimator should be familiar with the local market for materials, work with material and equipment vendors, contractors, and labor unions to determine material prices and labor rates and should be able to present their finished estimate in detail to several parties.

This role requires strong mathematical, analytical, and communication skills as well as great attention to detail.

Principal Job Responsibilities

  1. Prepare estimates of probable costs of materials, labour, and equipment for construction projects.
  2. Establish and maintain tendering process (RFPs).
  3. Prepare RFP, prepare trade scopes and details of work breakdown, list of inclusions and exclusions.
  4. Review and assist Construction Management team with identifying constructability, sequencing, and other risk factors.
  5. Complete detailed take-offs for all disciplines.
  6. Prepare detailed comparison spread sheets for Project Manager for all tenders received.
  7. Advise on tendering procedures, examine, and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards, and conduct negotiations with suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors.
  8. Assist with the preparation of Purchase Orders, Change Orders and Sub-Contracts as required.
  9. Assist with value engineering processes.
  10. Processes paperwork and travels to building sites as required.
  11. Resolves cost differences by analyzing and collecting info.
  12. Writes up and presents budgets, reports, and project plans.
  13. Stays up to date with safety codes and improvements in construction.
  14. Being aware of new construction practices and materials available on the market.
  15. Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  16. Liaise, consult, and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors, and subcontractors, and prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.

Construction Estimator Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong math skills including algebra, geometry, and basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to navigate specifications and plans.
  • Extensive understanding of construction methods and materials.
  • Close attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly to unforeseen situations.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments at once.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of project management software and take off and estimating software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work independently as well as working in a team environment.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree or college diploma in mathematics, architecture, engineering, or a similar field is required.
  • +5 years of related experience in estimating and procurement is required, field experience is an asset.
